Postsecondary Counseling Newsletter

September 9th, 2024

10th graders & Families,

Hello Class of 2027! For those of you that are new to AHS, I am Erin Cummins-Roper, Dean of College and Career counseling. The other half of our department is Elliot Baglini, the AHS LINK internship coordinator and elective teacher.

You can expect newsletters from the Postsecondary Counseling department (Elliot and me) about every 2-3 weeks. These newsletters will contain information on college and other postsecondary opportunities and planning, updates on what we've been working on in school, and more.

Mark your Calendar: 10th grade Postsecondary night

Wednesday, October 2nd

5:30-6:30pm

AHS Commons

We will discuss the following topics:

-10th Grade postsecondary programming

-Work-based learning @ AHS - what it is and why we do it

-Postsecondary options - not one size fits all!

-SAT and it's role in college admissions

-Paying for college: the basics

College Fairs

Tis the season for college fairs! College fairs are a great opportunity to discover colleges you may not know about yet and programs of study that you may not have known about or thought of. Even after 16 years in postsecondary counseling, I still learn things from going to college fairs! Check out the information below about the two local upcoming fairs.

Sign up to ride with us to the 4-corners fair (FREE and free lunch!)

Orientation- during orientation, Elliot and I worked with the 10th graders on making successful choices. We revisited the Choices of Successful students framework from last year. Students reflected on their 9th grade year and their academic outcomes. They thought about what they were proud of from last year and what they could have improved upon. We also looked at some example transcripts and discussed the role of the transcript in creating options after high school for college and career. Students then through about specific behaviors they will engage in this year to lead them to success.

College visits - College admission officers occasionally visit AHS during the school day. Students are encouraged to attend these visits to learn more about different colleges. These visits usually take place during class time, so students need to ask permission from their teacher before leaving class.
