River District Arts - Sperryville, VA
Washington Society of Landscape Painters Centennial Exhibit Aug. 3 - Sept. 29
ARTIST RECEPTION SATURDAY, AUGUST 10 - 3 to 5

In 1913, when the Washington Society of Landscape Painters (originally known as the Ramblers) were formed one did not have to go far from downtown DC to be literally in the countryside.

WSLP is a group of juried plein air landscape painters who gather regularly for paint outs, constructive critique and exhibits at various venues. Today the organization's membership numbers 40 professional artists.

During August and September, River District Arts will host a special exhibit and sale of landscape paintings in celebration of WSLP's centennial anniversary.

Be sure to not miss this one. You will have to wait 50 years for WSLP's sesquicentennial exhibit!

Old Truck Tailgates Find New Uses

A bottle opener is standard equipment on the Blue Collar Benches created by Yesterday Reclaimed. We now have three benches on display at RDA ready for a test drive.  The mastermind behind the benches is Roque (Row Key) Castro. He is owner and founder of  an industrial design and fabrication business that specializes in using salvaged materials to make well-built, patina heavy furniture in nearby Griffinsburg, VA.

The popularity of the Blue Collar Benches has been remarkable.  General Motors recently commissioned Yesterday Reclaimed to create benches for an automotive trade show.  Other people simply want them for their nostalgic character. The Yesterday Reclaimed crew will even create a bench from your own tailgate or create a bench using a truck model you specify.  Roque has numerous pickers scavenging the countryside for tailgates just waiting to become benches!

Apple Heritage Exhibit  Sept. 7 - Oct. 27

Apples have played an important role in Rappahannock County's history.  The Rappahannock County was even known once as "The Little Apple."

We will pay homage to Rappahannock County's apple heritage during "harvest season" with an "orchard" full of recently created fine art and craft inspired by the infamous Apple.

In the September issue of ARTICLES, we will provide more specifics about the Apple Heritage Exhibit.
