A message from Councilman Jeff Blubaugh...
Boise skyline
A view of downtown Boise, ID
Several Council Members, along with the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce, Greater Wichita Partnership, and other  business leaders from Wichita spent several days in Boise, Idaho on a City to City tour.  First let me explain that the City to City initiative is a way for city leadership to visit other cities around the country that are experiencing growth through various means and ways. And we share with the hosting city those initiatives that are working for us here in Wichita. And while Boise is a lovely city that sits along Interstate 84, has mountains to the east of the City, and is about the same distance to Oregon as we are to Oklahoma, it's not as impressive as Wichita. As you can tell by the photo, Boise is also the Capitol of Idaho. What I really took away from this trip is how much more I love being in Wichita. First of all, Wichita has about 75% more people, and while we rate #188 across the United States in ethnic diversity, Boise is only ranked #385. This has provided Wichita with a wealth of culture as well as an extensive selection of cuisines.  We both have about the same median (average) age of residents; Boise averages 35.3 average age and Wichita is slightly younger at 34.7 years of age. But where it becomes very apparent that Wichita comes out the winner is the cost of housing.  The median cost of a house or condo in Boise is $220,000, while in Wichita the median cost is $124,000.  Boise is 77% higher than Wichita.  And yes, their median income is a little higher, but only by 12%. And as we all know, getting around in Wichita is a breeze compared to most other cities across the nation.  Now I know there are those who would like beaches, mountains, and forests, but since Wichita is centrally located with wonderful interstate that can take us in any direction we desire via vehicle, these destinations are no more than a day or two away. And now that our beautiful new air terminal boasts seven (7) airlines with thirteen non-stop flights, you can be at any number of destinations within a few hours.  So I can happily say, there's no place like home!

WICHway traffic alerts available by text or email
WICHway, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) on Wichita's highways, offers a new feature sending subscribers texts and/or emails that share special traffic alerts created by operators at the WICHway Traffic Management Center. The alerts are created when a traffic problem such as a major crash, a highway closure or a similar event causes a significant disruption on a Wichita highway. The alerts are an extension of the WICHway website ( www.WICHway.org), an informational resource the public can consult before traveling on Wichita's highways.

NEIGHBORHOOD STREET REPAIRS

I n 2016, the City Council allocated $10 million from the sale of the Hyatt Hotel to repair residential asphalt streets with zero years of remaining service life.  The $10 million program is funding the improvement of 212 lanes miles or 41%, of the City's poorest condition asphalt streets.  Work began on the program in February 2017.

All projects within the program have been contracted out for a total of $8.8 million.  To date, the now $9 million program has improved 159 lane miles at a cost of $7 million.  All pavement repairs and scrub seal treatments are complete, with just micro surface application remaining.  Recent rains and below normal temperatures forecasted for the remainder of October will extend completion of the micro surface into Spring 2019.  An interactive map of the on-going construction and completed locations can be found  HERE.

HELPFUL  INFORMATION
A house fire can happen in a flash!
F.L.A.S.H.
Fire Loss Awareness for Safer Homes

Fires occur every day in our community. Fires can be a significant risk to life and property, which is why the extinguishment of fires is a key mission of the Wichita Fire Department. Wouldn't the mission to protect life and property be more successful if the fire never started?
A major part of the WFD mission is known as Community Risk Reduction, CRR for short. One of the many aspects of CRR is the F.L.A.S.H. program, short for Fire Loss Awareness for Safer Homes. F.L.A.S.H. seeks to educate the public about house fires and decrease the occurrences of these fires. After a fire, WFD works hard not only to minimize the damage and any injuries, but also finds out what caused the fire. Often, a few days after a dwelling fire occurs, the fire crews who worked the fire will return to the neighborhood and interact with the community. Crews knock on doors and talk with neighbors about what happened, the cause of the fire (if known) and provide steps to take in order to avoid a similar situation. Along with basic safety information, crews offer to check smoke alarms and connect citizens with resources should they need additional smoke alarms.
So far in 2018 fire crews have conducted over 71 FLASH programs, directly contacting over 730 citizens and leaving fire safety information flyers at over 5,220 households. There is an old saying of "knowing is half the battle." The aim of the FLASH program is to share vital information with the community so they know what caused a fire in their neighborhood, equipping them to hopefully prevent such a fire in their own home.
For additional information, or if you know someone who needs a smoke alarm please contact the Community Risk Reduction Division of the WFD at 268-4441. You can also find information at wiichita.gov/fire and through our social media sites on Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat.

CHAPTER 8.02. -
 EXCESSIVE CALLS FOR POLICE SERVICE
 AT CHRONIC NUISANCE PROPERTIES

The purpose of this Chapter is to promote the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the City of Wichita, Kansas to protect neighborhoods from chronic incidents of violence, criminal conduct and other repetitive behaviors which are offensive to residents and which damage or contribute to the deterioration of property or improvements in the community. The procedures set forth below are intended to hold property owners, tenants and other responsible parties accountable for chronic and repeated criminal violations occurring on such property which result in repeated calls for police service. Some of the most common complaint calls can be loud noise, barking dogs, and other disturbances that can cause disruption to the surrounding residents. You don't have to put up with it.  Call 911 or go on-line and make a report in order to start the process.  Additionally, talk to your neighbors about doing the same.  You can empower yourself by starting here.
