Message of the Moment

Connect aka Belonging

You are Welcome

This Sunday at 10:45 in the Guild Hall

"Just as love of God begins with listening to his word so the beginning of love for our brothers and sisters is learning to listen to them." Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them." Romans 12:4-6

Connection enriches the meaning of parish membership and discovering the gifts of God in people.

Connection helps the newcomer answer these questions: Where do I fit in? Can I make friends in this church? Is there room for me relationally? Does this church need me? Can I find a place to belong and serve? Am I safe here?

Would you like to join EfM?

Education for Ministry (EfM) will begin a new session in early September when we have the requisite six participants which is the minimum number for a class.

The EfM program is designed to help us prepare for ministry in the church or in life. We pray each week, at the end of the communion service, “And now, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.”

At our Confirmation, we ask God to “Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at Baptism. Send them forth in the power of the Spirit to perform the service you set before them.” EfM offers an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to a Christian life.

Learn to Livestream!

Attention St James Family! We are seeking volunteers to help run the weekly livestream process. We are looking to build a team of 6 or more folks to run this on a rotational basis. To ramp up, it is recommended that you shadow the fellas from Wichita Livestream a couple of times or you can shadow Woody Swain or myself when its our turn. Everyone young and old can learn this skill and be part of an essential ministry to connect the parish virtually each week. If interested or you know of anyone that might be interested that isn't a member but likes this kind of stuff, contact Danny Blair, Bert Clark, or Woody Swain. Also, as a reminder you can watch any episode of St James' church serve by going to www.youtube.com/@StJamesWichita

Until then see you on the InterWebs!!

Holy Cross Day

Holy Cross Day is on September 14 each year. This year at all worship services on Sept. 14 and 15, we will celebrate salvation brought to us by way of the Holy Cross. The observance includes the use of lots of fresh basil sprigs. If you are growing basil and are willing to share your harvest with us that weekend, your bounty will be very appreciated. Everyone is invited to bring a small cross from their household. The crosses may be placed on the altar prior to the service for a special blessing. Please take crosses home after worship the same day you bring them.

Basic A

Our 8-week introductory course about the Episcopal Church will be held in the chapel on Tuesday evenings October 8 through November 26. Confirmation, which is open to all who complete the course, will be held at St. James on March 30, 2025.

Outreach Committee

Sandwich Saturday - Pet Assistance

Needed for Sandwich Saturday: cat or dog food. If bringing dry food, please place in one quart plastic bags. Please label each bag so that we know if it is cat food or dog food.

Many people need help with feeding their furry friends. Please leave donations by front desk in the container for Sandwich Saturday.

The St. James Outreach Committee is beginning the annual back to school drive. We will be collecting supplies for 26 schools that Pando Initiative serves. The drive will run August 10th through September 8th. Hygiene items and school supplies along with back packs are needed.

A list of suggestions can be found here, and there are extra flyers at the front desk. Please put the donated items in the basket by the red door. Thanks for your help with this drive.

Loving, Liberating and Life-Giving

Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Love God, Love God’s World” Creation Care Curriculum

“Love God; Love God’s World” is a nine-session, film-based curriculum designed for Episcopalians anywhere on the journey with creation care and environmental ministry—from newcomers looking to take their first step to seasoned leaders seeking a transformative small-group experience.

Sessions have a similar structure to the popular Sacred Ground curriculum and include films and readings, faith-based reflections, and discussion questions—each written by a different contributor and drawing from personal contexts and experiences. Participants will discover ways to learn, pray, advocate, and conserve.

Find session titles, authors, and a sample session online; register your small group to get access to the full curriculum.

Contact the Rev. Caroline Howard, Curate for Creation Care to learn more about how the Diocese of Kansas is Loving God's World and how to get involved.
