Tea Cakes and Black History: Reclaiming a Legacy

Dessert is one of my favoritie "meals." It is tasty and easy to digest. But, I have to admit that the history behind my tasty treats is not always a consideration that is at the forefront of my mind. As I was researching tasty treats that will be coming more popular as the holidays approach and the seasons change ... I discovered some black history behind some of the treats that tantilize our tastebuds. Check out this story from Educator Etha Robinson that was published in the National Geographic's Education Blog. ---

Excert: "Over time, my calling has become to elevate the tea cake to its rightful place as a cultural touchstone and pay homage to our ancestors. The tea cake was a way to savor life and have something sweet even when things were hard. I first learned about the history of tea cakes from a book called Christmas Gift, by Charlemae Rollins, about how enslaved people were allowed to cook certain things at Christmastime, and one of those recipes was a tea cake. Tea cake recipes were passed by word of mouth because our ancestors couldn’t read or write; they were forbidden from learning, of course. They didn’t have measuring cups or spoons, but they were able to create the recipes by word of mouth with loose measurements..."

BLACK HISTORY 365

Our history is an intrical part of who we are and it goes far beyond the 28 days in the month of February. For the last 4-years, the eMFTH has been featuring BH facts weekly, which is a testament to how much history we have. Keep joining us weekly as we continue to explore and highlight Black History 365!

Benefits of memorizing Scripture & techniques

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teachings and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon each soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongs and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
