Northside Common Ministry Food Drive

May 7 to 21st

The mission committee has run a Food drive for Northside Common Ministries 2 times a year for almost 10 years. The need for food and other pantry items has only gotten greater over the years. The mission team will be running a special drive now till the 21st of May.

The NCM pantry has asked that we collect Chicken noodle soup, Brownie mix and Baking soda.  Any food item is fine but the pantry likes to give certain items to every family each month and are in need of the 3 requested. They serve at least 200 families a month.

Food items can be placed in the library across from the office.

Cash is also a good donation so that they may purchase any needed item at a reduced cost from the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank. This can be done by making out a check to Northmont UP Church with NCM food drive written in the memo line or you could use the pew envelope for cash be sure to indicate that it is for NCM food drive and placing that in the offering plate on any Sunday in May.

Thank you for helping those in need.

MOTHER’S DAY

In honor of Mother’s Day, Northmont’s mission committee is accepting donations for Hearth - North Hills Affordable Housing, in May. Hearth provides housing, food, clothing, support services and child care to homeless women and their family. Northmont’s late member Jean Stultz helped initiate Hearth in 1995. Please consider making a donation in honor of the special mothers and other important women in your life.

Friday, May 26th has been set aside as National Northmont Cleanup the Gardens Day. (Rain date, Saturday, May 27th, same time.) We will be meeting this day (8:30 until noon) to do some weeding, trimming, and pruning to help make our beautiful church look its Sunday best!  Bring your garden gloves, weeders, trowels, shovels, pruners, hedge clippers, weed whackers, tarps (for hauling away debris) brooms, or whatever you feel comfortable using.  Please be sure all your tools are well marked with your names on them.  Bring your own water bottle if you like. The church doors will be open for bathroom breaks.   If you only want to stay for an hour or so, that is ok too.  Many hands make light work and with all of us pitching in, it will go quite quickly.  If you would be so kind as to let me know if you are coming, I will be grateful.  That way, if there are any last minute changes, I can email them right out to you.  Thank you so much in advance!  Sincerely, Bill Goff goff307@comcast.net or  412-366-6821.

Last year the Session approved four projects for the Memorial Fund Wish List.  One of those projects, development of a new Northmont website, was completed in March.  You have probably noticed the recent completion of a second project – signage throughout the interior of the church and a few new signs outside. The signs are particularly helpful to new members and to visitors to Northmont for Sunday worship services, weddings, funerals, and meetings of groups that share our space. Special thanks go out to Sarah Jane Beorn, Bonnie Elphinstone, and Anne Linaberger, who worked with a graphic design and sign company to make this happen. Thanks also to Scott Davis and Bill English (the younger) for preparing walls for the new indoor signs.

The Memorial Committee acknowledges with sincere gratitude the friends and families of Dale Barger, Dorothy Dickson, Deane Frank, Dave Meister, Tom Snaman, Jean Stultz, and Linda Zmuda, whose memorial contributions paid for this Signage Project.  Thank you all very much.

This summer we will look at where we see encouragement in our faith outside the Bible, by looking at song lyrics, poems and short stories that have encouraged us to live in faith. I need your help, think about songs, poems and short stories in your life that you have come across that have inspired your faith. Please submit these ideas here,or click the banner above or email them to benjaminwrobbins@gmail.com.

Longvue Acres Garden Club Perennial Plant Sale

Saturday, May 20, 2023

Mark your calendars! The Longvue Acres Garden Club will host its 73 rd spring perennial plant sale, Saturday, May 20 th from 9:00 a.m. to Noon – Rain or Shine – in the lower parking lot of Northmont United Presbyterian Church, 8169 Perry Highway, McCandless. The CASH ONLY sale will feature more than 600 perennial plants including highly valued Pennsylvania natives and pollinators. Since the plants are grown in members’ gardens and donated for the sale, it’s always a surprise to see the variety of plants available from year to year. Avid gardeners will arrive early to snag the most sought-after plants that sell in the first hour. Club members, some of whom are Penn State Master Gardeners, will be available to answer gardening questions and to help with plant selections.

Plant sale proceeds generously fund monthly educational programs for the public and support the maintenance of the UPMC Passavant chapel garden. Additionally, funds raised in the plant sale support not only the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Botanic Gardens of Western Pennsylvania, and North Area Environmental Council, but also local community gardens in McCandless and Ross Township. Longvue Acres Garden Club meets at 7:00 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month at Northmont U.P. Church.

For more information about the plant sale or Longvue Acres Garden club, please contact longvueacresgardenclub1950@gmail.com.
