The Lake Current - September 2020

Welcome to the September 2020 edition of our Council newsletter! While we're starting to gradually ramp up with activities, we're still limited in what we can do and how we can do it. Once again this edition will necessarily be brief. But we want to let you know again that the Council is still moving forward and trying to get back to normal as fast as we can.
Our next regular monthly business meeting is this Wednesday, September 9th, starting at 7:30 p.m. We will be serving dinner around 6:30 p.m. Please join us for dinner and the meeting, while observing appropriate social-distancing and face-mask use.
At our meeting you will have an opportunity to reserve and pre-pay for our Oktoberfest to avoid the online sales fee. Advance ticket purchase is absolutely required; there will be no walk-ins. We will also have Oktoberfest 50/50 tickets at the meeting, which you can purchase or pick up to help out with sales. This event is an important fundraiser for St. James Parish, and it will require more volunteers than usual. We need volunteers to serve as waiters, table bussers, runners, servers, cleaners, and more to make this the success we need it to be to help out our parish. More info is in the news item below, but come to the meeting to learn more and volunteer!
Our meeting will also be your last chance to order Council shirts, jackets, and fleeces before the order is placed with the vendor. See the news item below for more information.
For those who cannot (or do not want to) attend in-person, we are planning to again webcast the meeting live via Zoom. Because our meetings are restricted to the membership, the link to the Zoom meeting will be provided to Council members upon request. Just send an email to our webmaster and he'll send you the link to the Zoom meeting.

Oktoberfest for St. James Parish - Oct. 3!
Join us on Saturday, October 3rd for authentic German food, German beer, and live German music from the famous Austrian Boys Band!
This year we have to do things a little differently. First, this is a fundraiser for St. James the Apostle Parish and School, which was forced to cancel its annual summer Feast of St. James due to COVID-19 restrictions. That was a major hit to our parish's finances, and we're going to donate proceeds from Oktoberfest to help them out.
Next, to comply with the restrictions and also give more opportunities for our guests to help us raise funds, we're serving dinner in four 2-hour seatings to a maximum of 50 guests in our dining room.
The seatings are from Noon to 2 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. (All seatings will end approximately 10 minutes before the next seating to allow us to properly clean the dining room.)
You must purchase tickets in advance for a seating. There are no walk-ins or sales at the door.
CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE TICKETS ONLINE.
For your $25 donation you will receive admission, appetizers, dinner, dessert & coffee, live music, and one draft German beer. Additional beer will be available for purchase.
When placing your ticket order, select one of the following two dinners:
Full Schnitzel Dinner: Pork schnitzel with hunter gravy, red cabbage, mashed potatoes, green beans amandine, pumpernickel roll & butter.
OR
Wurst Platter: Grilled bratwurst and knackwurst, homestyle sauerkraut (cabbage, onions, meat), German potato salad, European-style hard roll.
You may also pre-purchase either dinner to-go for $15. To-go order tickets are sold separately and are required for to-go orders.
A maximum of 50 tickets will be sold per seating. Even if a seating is not sold out, all ticket sales will end by September 30 so that we can get a final meal count.
Our beer garden (back patio) and driveway will be open for outdoor seating in compliance with state and local restrictions for guests before and after their dinner seatings.
Seating is very limited, so buy your tickets today!!! And thank you for your support of St. James parish!

Our Golf Outing Was Another Hole-in-One!
It was a little later than usual due to COVID-19, but we managed to pull off another great outing for Putnam's golfers and our Council on Friday, August 28th.
Not even a pandemic could stop us from honoring our dearly departed brother Knight at the eponymous George Dean Memorial Golf Outing! Putnam County Golf Course was in fantastic shape, the weather was fine, and the golfers enjoyed a spectacular day on the links that included golfer swag, a delicious lunch, a beverage cart, and lots of friendly competition and fun.
After shooting a great round (some greater than others), our golfers came back to the Council for appetizers, cocktails, a full filet mignon dinner and dessert, followed by an awards ceremony and lots of great raffle prizes. And we did it with all with appropriate COVID-19 safeguards in place.

Congratulations to the winning foursome of Tommy Feighery, Bill Carlin, Jorma Tompuri, and Kevin Quinn. They are pictured here holding the Dean Trophy joined by GK Ralph Fleischman (far right) and Anthony Falco (far left).
Many thanks to our Golf Outing Committee, especially our tireless chairman Anthony Falco, for not only pulling off another great outing, but doing so under adverse conditions. Thanks also to the Dean Family, our golfers, our sponsors, our unbeatable council catering crew, and everybody who pitched in to make our major annual fundraiser such a great success.
Enjoy some pictures from the golf course taken by our talented in-house photographer, Harry Gorman:

Putnam 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to be Virtual
Putnam County's Annual September 11th Candlelight Vigil will be held on Friday, September 11th, at the Putnam Heroes Memorial located at Cornerstone Park, Carmel. Out of an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its potential health hazards, the Putnam Heroes Memorial Committee has decided to live-stream this year's ceremony on the internet.
The ceremony will start at 8:00 p.m. Cornerstone Park will be closed to the public and will only be open to those involved in the actual ceremony and its production. It is estimated that Cornerstone Park will be closed from 6:00 p.m. until the conclusion of the ceremony.
This year the memorial will be adding one name: Commissioner Robert McMahon, Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services.
The Memorial Committee will also be dedicating a tree that was a seedling taken from the World Trade Center Survivor Tree to the healthcare workers, emergency and essential services, and the volunteers who fought and kept us healthy, safe and sustained. In addition, the committee will also remember those who passed as a result of this pandemic.
St. James the Apostle Church will be having its September 11th Mass of Remembrance at 7:00 p.m. The Mass will also be live-streamed, with no congregants at the service.
The site for the Mass of Remembrance is the "St James Parish" channel on YouTube, which may be found by clicking here.
It is recommended that you sign into the sites prior to the start.
It is encouraged that you watch the Mass and/or the Candlelight Vigil from the safety of your home.

Please make sure to SAVE THE DATE for our upcoming events!

Sat. Nov. 7 - 49th Annual Dinner Dance & Awards Ceremony: We are planning (and praying!) to hold our Annual on its regularly scheduled date, which is always the first Saturday in November. For now we're hoping to be able to do it just as we have in the past few years, with a cocktail hour, sit-down dinner, awards ceremony, live music (Soulmates!) and dancing in the St. James school gym. Because COVID-19 restrictions could change, all we can do at this point is ask you to PLEASE SAVE THE DATE and plan to be there! We'll make a definite announcement with all the details and start taking reservations within the next few weeks. No matter what form it ultimately takes, once we announce, we are going to depend upon our members to very promptly make reservations, take journal ads, and sign-up to help out with decorations, setup, and the usual tasks that make the Annual our Council's EVENT OF THE YEAR!
