THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD

A Puritan Exposition of Ephesians 6:10f.

by William Gouge

According to Dr. Don Kistler: "'The Armor of God' has done better out of the gates than any book I've ever done, either with Soli Deo Gloria or The Northampton Press. I've sold half of the print run already in the first two months since it's release."

“All of Puritan William Gouge’s writings are eminently biblical, sound, practical, wise, and sanctifying. Don Kistler is to be commended for bringing this once well-known work, The Whole Armor of God, back into print in a modern, lightly edited edition. This is long overdue. For too long this valuable work on Christian armor has been overshadowed by William Gurnall’s massive work on the same subject, but Gouge’s work is every bit as worthy—and considerably shorter, even at 584 pages! If you are serious as a Christian about growing in grace and holiness and fighting the good fight of faith, you will definitely profit immensely from reading this challenging yet encouraging work. Highly recommended!” —Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

By JOHN COLQUHOUN

(1) THE COVENANT OF GRACE

"This republication of Colquhoun’s work should be welcomed as a wonderful instrument to recalibrate our theological and spiritual engines. It is well worthy of a place among the books that we “read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest” because it is so Scripture-concentrated, pastorally sensitive, and full of spiritual wisdom. Each of his publications marks him out as a man and minister of unusual gifts. "—From the foreword by Sinclair Ferguson

(2) THE COVENANT OF WORKS

This is the companion volume to Colquhoun’s great work The Covenant of Grace, published in 2020 by The Northampton Press. In this title the author deals with covenants, imputation, and other subjects necessary to a full understanding of salvation. John Colquhoun was one of Scotland’s greatest preachers and theologians. He is painstaking and thorough in his treatment of this important subject for, as Luther once remarked, “we ought never to preach grace without the law or the law without grace.” We will never understand our great salvation until we realize what we have been saved from.

by Samuel Willard

Many are familiar with the two covenants God made with mankind, 'The Covenant of Works' and 'The Covenant of Grace'. But not many are familiar with the covenant God made with Himself and with Christ, which theologians call 'The Covenant of Redemption'.

In this very rare work, the New England Puritan, Samuel Willard, opens this doctrine in its fullness and shows us the eternal plan God devised to honor His Son before the entire universe, and the obedience of Christ in agreeing to all the terms of the covenant. This 'Covenant of Redemption' is the basis and foundation for all that God intended to do for lost sinners.

by Jeremiah Burroughs

These are the last sermons this great Puritan preached before he died of tuberculosis in 1646. Burroughs was a member of the Independent faction of the Westminster Assembly. Though he died at a relatively young age, the amount of material he left behind is staggering.

This book was first published in 1660 by some of Burroughs’ friends and admirers, of which there were many. It was reprinted in 1867 in the Nichols Series of Puritan reprints and that edition was published again 1987 by Soli Deo Gloria. This is the first ever modern edition of this classic work.

It is perhaps the greatest tribute to this man that his contemporaries held him in such high esteem. No less men of renown than Thomas Goodwin, William Greenhill, William Bridge and Edmund Calamy published six volumes of his writings after his death because of their regard for his piety.

Burroughs’s irenic personality, noted by many who knew him, is clearly exemplified in his decision to exposit the Beatitudes (originally given in forty-one sermons and compiled into Saint’s Happiness) as found in Matthew 5, which extol meekness, mercy, and peacemaking.

"I suspect that our Lord's BEATITUDES were never more Scripturally, poignantly and practically expounded than in the pages that follow. Truly it is a blessed exposition of the 'Blesseds.' Study this book if you want a refresher course in the whole Bible." -from the Foreword by John Gerstner

by Christopher Love

“Christopher Love was a brilliant young Welsh preacher and rising star in the world of Puritan ministry,” wrote the late J.I. Packer. Love was highly regarded by his peers. He was a staunch Presbyterian and a Covenanter. The American preacher, Jonathan Edwards, read Love and had his books in his personal library.

Thomas Manton, a fellow Presbyterian and Love’s good friend, preached at Love’s funeral to a huge audience. Love’s wife wrote 140 pages of memoirs about her husband. “His family looked upon him as a Moses for meekness and a Job for patience,” she wrote. “He lived too much in heaven to live long out of heaven.”

Here are Love’s 15 sermons on Grace, taken from 1 Kings 14:13: “Because in him there is found some good thing toward the Lord God of Israel.” The Puritans saw a God who looked for “some good thing” in His people. The “Hall of Fame” in Hebrews 11 is full of people who, for all we know, only did one good thing, and yet are held up as models of faith. That indeed is grace, and that indeed is amazing!

by Nicolas Claget

Antinomianism, the teaching that a Christian now has no relation to God’s law, is an age-old heresy. It is nothing new, as this book written 375 years ago shows. This is not a peripheral matter; it is a matter of true salvation or false hopes. Published in 1659, the full title is “The Abuse of God’s Grace, Discovered in the Kinds, Causes, Punishments, Symptoms, Cures, Differences, Cautions, and Other Practical Improvements Thereof, Proposed as a Seasonable Check to the Wanton Libertinism of the Present Age.”

“I have written several books and read dozens more whose aim is to confront a variety of antinominan teachings. But Claget’s book is as meticulously thorough as any I have ever read. This is the very best kind of Puritan writing. It’s a powerful work that is urgently needed to be brought back in print. This is a profoundly convicting book.” — John Macarthur

by Jonathan Edwards

WE HAVE REDUCED THE PRICE YET AGAIN

Jonathan Edwards is known as a ‘‘hellfire and brimstone’’ preacher. Actually, his favorite theme was the beauty and excellency of Jesus Christ. In fact, only about 41 of his 1100 sermons were about hell and judgment. Here are 16 of those sermons, most have never been published before. This material was made available in 2018 as an ebook. It is finally available in a printed edition.

Every revival of note has had two common themes preached from the pulpit—justification by faith alone and God’s pending punishment for the impenitent. If we are to see revival in our day, those themes need to be brought to the forefront once again. May it please the Lord to use these rare sermons by this great Puritan preacher to spark the flames of revival among us.

by Matthew Mead, edited by DonKistler

The present work was found as handwritten manuscripts in 1703 and remained unpublished until 1836. It was published along with five sermons on Ezekiel 37 concerning the Jews.

Here are 12 sermons on Hebrews 10:31, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” These are penetrating, convicting, and informative sermons on the terrible fate awaiting the impenitent. These predate the sermons of Jonathan Edwards on the same subject.

This is great material for use in personal evangelism.

It is also of great comfort to those who have repented to see what they have been spared from.

FAREWELL SERMON OF MATTHEW MEAD ON 1 CORINTHIANS 1:3

by Christopher Love

The Combat between the Flesh and Spirit: as also the woeful withdrawing of the Spirit of God, with the causes thereof, and walking in, and after the Spirit, together with the blessedness thereof, being the sum and substance of 27 sermons preached a little before his death in 1651.

“Christopher Love was a brilliant young Welsh preacher and a rising star in the world of Puritan ministry,” wrote Dr. J.I. Packer. Love was a prominent London minister, a staunch Presbyterian, a Covenanter, and a member of the Westminster Assembly. The American Puritan, Jonathan Edwards, had Love’s books in his personal library.

Author of 'An Alarm to the Unconverted'

Joseph Alleine is a much respected and much beloved Puritan preacher. His best known work is 'An Alarm to the Unconverted', first published in 1672 and steadily in print for over 300 years.

Some of those are: “The Art of Dying Well,” “Self-Examination,” “A Serious Call to Christians to Win Souls to Christ,” “God May Be Sorely Angry with His People,” and “The Greatness of Christ’s Love.” The last one is his farewell sermon after the Great Ejection of 1662.
