📖 Gospel Meditation ✝️

July 14, 2024

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time readings focus on stewardship and the Gospel. They highlight the concept of being chosen and sent. The prophet Amos was chosen by the Lord and sent to use his talents for the people of God. The Gospel recounts the story of the sending of the twelve. In the second reading, St. Paul reminds us that we, too, are chosen. The key questions for reflection are: For what have I been chosen? To whom have I been sent?

A reflection by — Father John Muir ©LPi

Once, I asked a friend who had fallen away from the Catholic faith what he remembered about the parish priest from his youth. He said, "He was a gentle, nice guy. Kind of vanilla. Kept to himself." It struck me that he, perhaps like many, perceives Catholic priests as lonely, harmless, and self-sufficient.

The mighty image of what we see in the Gospel this Sunday challenges both this perception (accurate or not) and us priests who perhaps feel a pull in that uninspiring direction.

✨ Jesus sent out his apostles "two-by-two, with power over demons, and without money belts."

Two-by-two: they enjoyed deep fellowship and brotherhood.

Power over demons: they were anything but harmless. These men wielded enormous power against evil.

💸 Without money belts, they were not self-sufficient. They needed others to help them.

Not lonely, but in community. Not harmless but armed with massive spiritual energy. Not self-sufficient, but poor and in need of help.

This is a challenge to me, and perhaps to all of us, living in a rich, secularized, and individualized culture.

💭 Do I embrace my priestly ministry in deep fellowship with other priests?

🗣️ Do I speak and act boldly to drive out evil where it is found?

🌾 Do I live poorly and simply, trusting in the help of those around me, even for basic needs?

The fruitfulness of priestly ministry largely depends on these three traits. Let’s pray for all priests — and, by extension, all Christians — to live more like Jesus’ communal, poor, and powerful apostles.

🌞🕊️ Ways to Incorporate Faith in Summer Fun 🕊️🌞

Beyond the normal fun-in-the-sun activities, you can also prioritize living your faith as a family this summer. It is easy to have good intentions and little follow-through, so putting prayer and service into your schedule will remind you of your goals and help keep you accountable. Here are some suggestions:

- 🥪 Make sack lunches for a local soup kitchen or homeless ministry

- 🌿 Do yard work for an elderly neighbor

- ⛪ Make a pilgrimage to your Cathedral (or a Mission, or pilgrimage site)

- ✝️ Pray the Stations of the Cross outside

- 👵👴 Take your grandparents to Mass and breakfast on the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne (Jesus’ Grandparents, Feast Day - Friday, July 26)

- 👕🧸 Go through your clothing and toys and share with a young family or donate to a local charity

- 🍲 Make a meal for someone in your parish who is sick or just had a baby

- 🌌 Stay up late and pray Night Prayer under the stars

For the pastoral care of the sick. We pray that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick confers the power of the Lord on those who receive it and their loved ones and becomes an ever more visible sign of compassion and hope for all.

Saint Camillus de Lellis, Feast Day July 18

He faced a lifelong leg disease starting at 17. After being dismissed from San Giacomo Hospital for quarrelsomeness and serving in the Venetian army, he lost everything to gambling at 24. This led him to work at a Capuchin friary, where a sermon inspired his conversion. Although repeatedly dismissed from the Capuchins due to his leg sore, he returned to San Giacomo, eventually becoming superintendent. With advice from Saint Philip Neri, he was ordained a priest at 34 and founded his congregation, focusing on the care of the sick. Camillus emphasized cleanliness and competence in hospital care and served prisoners, plague victims, and the dying. He and his community initiated the first recorded military field ambulance in 1595. Despite his suffering, Camillus remained dedicated to helping others throughout his life. He patronizes hospitals, nurses, and the sick alongside Saint John of God.
