Section Of Swede Road To Close April 17

Beginning April 17, Swede Road between Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) and Erbs Mill Road will be closed and detoured 24/7, PennDOT said. Drivers will be directed to use DeKalb Pike and Township Line Road. The section of Swede Road is expected to be closed until May 15.

The closure is part of the $56.5-million widening of a 2.8-mile stretch of Route 202.

Drivers should allow more time for travel near the work area because backups and slowdowns will occur. All work is weather dependent.

Daws Road from DeKalb Pike to Lafayette Way is also closed until about the end of this month as part of the Route 202 project.

Leaf Collection This Monday And Wednesday

Residents who live on the south side of Skippack Pike will have leaves and yard waste collected this Monday, April 10, and April 24 and residents north of Skippack Pike will have leaves collected this Wednesday, April 12, and April 26.

Leaves must be placed in biodegradable paper bags and put out at the curb the evening before the scheduled collection. As a reminder, please don’t rake leaves to the curb and do not place leaf waste and branch trimmings in plastic bags or in trash can containers. They will not be collected.

If your pickup is missed, you must call the Township the day of collection at 610-277-2400. This program is not available to private communities.

The Township does not sell paper bags for leaf collection. Bags are available for purchase at many hardware stores, supermarkets and warehouse stores.

As a reminder, street sweeping has resumed. In addition to keeping roadways looking clean, the street sweeper performs an important environmental function as it removes debris and sediment from roads that would otherwise be washed into storm sewers and ultimately streams.

If you encounter the street sweeper when driving, please use caution.

From The EAC: Natural Mulches

Dyed mulches can be very aesthetically pleasing and make landscape plants and beds stand out, but not all dyed mulches are safe or healthy for plants.  Most colored mulches are dyed with harmless dyes, like iron oxide-based dyes for red or carbon-based dyes for black and dark brown.

Some cheap dyes, however, can be dyed with harmful or toxic chemicals and made from recycled wood– like old pallets, decks, crates, etc. These recycled bits of treated wood can contain chromate copper arsenate (CCA) which can kill beneficial soil bacteria, beneficial insects, earthworms, and young plants and rob the plants of the nitrogen they need to survive.

Better alternatives to dyed mulches are natural mulches like double or triple shredded mulch, cedar mulch, or pine bark made directly from trees. Since these mulches are not dyed, they will also not fade as quickly as dyed mulches and will not need to be

topped up as often.
