"A Scout Is..."

Introducing a new monthly series titled "A Scout Is..." where we aim to highlight Scouts within our district who actively embody our core values. Each month, we will showcase a different value. Keep an eye out within your units for Scouts who are living examples of the Scout Law and inform us ! The series will debut in the North Star District newsletter this August.

Commissioner Corner

Quick thought- you recognize your Scouts for their achievements. They receive belt loops, pins, badges, patches and more to commemorate their hard work, and, most importantly, the fun they’re having in Scouting! Now for a quick question? Are you also doing that for your unit leaders? While we know that 99% of leaders don’t do it for the “bling”, these small tokens of appreciation can make a difference in your unit. Plus, it reflects what we’re doing with our youth and, as always, they are paying attention to what the adults are up to.

If you’re not sure where to start, we made some handy Google Sheets that allow you to track Service Stars, Veteran Awards, Den Leader Awards, Scoutmaster Keys, etc. PLUS each sheet includes the current form (including the recently updated Den Leader Award form). If you have questions or find any of this confusing (or need clarification (ie- what is a “Council Assigned Performance Objective? Easy answer is that it’s at least Bronze Journey to Excellence (JTE).)

BTW, these are just the “official” awards. You can absolutely extend the FUN of Scouting into awards for Adults AND Scouts! We’ll chat more about that in a future newsletter (or, if you can’t wait for the answer, you can always reach out to your Unit Commissioner or District Commissioner, Jenny G.
