We Commit Ourselves

And Our Resources

To Nurture the Spirit,

Grow in Community,

And Help Heal the World.

The congregation offered such profound, far-reaching - and numerous! - questions for last week's Question Box that Rev. Norm will continue to respond to them this Sunday. Join us as we honor the sacred practice of curiosity!

Volunteers Needed for Housing Partnership

First Parish is honored to support State Street Church in its service to immigrant families seeking asylum. We'll do that by staffing their shelter at 159 State Street for the week of April 21-27. We need a total of 21 volunteers. Each day, one person will work from 6pm to 8:30pm to greet and settle families. Two people will sleep onsite overnight. (Volunteers will receive clear directions on their simple responsibilities.) Email Kris Minister at krisminister@me.com to sign up or request more information.

Share the Plate Nominations

Each month, First Parish shares the offering received during one Sunday service by making a contribution to a nonprofit organization whose work advances the mission of First Parish, to nurture the spirit, grow in community and help heal the world. To nominate an organization for that one-time contribution, simply complete this form. You'll also find printed versions in our Parish Hall near the stairs. Thank you!

Family Fun Night

Friday, April 12 | 5 pm | Parish Hall

This is a multi-generational event to come together for pizza supper and to share games for all ages. Come check out the new games that we have added to our collection for everyone to play together! RSVP to Mary Wheeler (membershipteamchair@firstparishportland.org) before noon on April 12 so we have enough pizza; $5/person or $10/family.

Welcome Follen Youth Group!

This Sunday, we welcome the youth group from Follen Church, Unitarian Universalist, in Lexington, MA, as they begin a week of service to the Portland community. They’ll help lead worship in the morning then join us for Coffee Hour before meeting with our own Pastor Jeff Logan to learn about Grace Street Ministries.

First Parish History Tour

Sunday, April 14 | 11:30am | Meetinghouse

Join Kip Deserres for a guided tour of our meetinghouse and learn the history of our church. Newcomers and current members are all invited to attend. For more information, email Membership Coordinator Laurie Hasty.

Gratitude Ribbons

Sunday, April 14 | 11:30am | Parish Hall

Help an upcoming Religious Exploration project by making a gratitude ribbon. Find the ribbons and markers in the Parish Hall after Sunday Services and note what you feel grateful for this spring OR bring in your own gratitude ribbon from home! The children will use the ribbons for a fun surprise on April 28th.

Intro to Text Analysis

Sunday, April 21| 11:30 am | Upstairs Classroom

Following next Sunday’s service, Derek Campbell invites anyone interested in play reading to an introductory meeting about a potential text analysis class. It will be a practical nuts-and-bolts course highlighting the collaborative nature of the relationship between a director, his design team, and the actors. We’ll discuss the challenges they encounter and the responsibilities they share in the creative journey from page to stage. Depending on level of interest, this initial gathering may be a first step in the formation of a play reading circle in the Fall.

Flowers are a Living Chalice

Consider donating flowers for the chalice table for Sunday morning service. Instructions are on the sign up sheet posted by the stairs in the Parish Hall. You may dedicate your donation as a memorial or to honor an event such as an anniversary.

Ongoing Opportunities at First Parish

Musical Sneak Peek!

Come at 9:40 am on Sundays for a first stab at the morning's hymns. Our Music Director, along with our First Parish Choir, will run through each hymn to allow all in attendance to learn the melody and form. There will be other tips that will give you the confidence to sing out during the service. See you there!

If you are not feeling well, tested positive for Covid, or have been exposed to Covid, please enjoy Sunday services from the comfort of your own home. Live streaming is easily accessible here. As a reminder, you can order free Covid tests from the government at this link.

Is Stewardship In Your

Long-Term Financial Plans?

Legacy gifts are an important source of lasting support for our church. The Trustees acknowledge these bequests on behalf of a grateful congregation. If you would like to know more about ways you can make a future gift, please email Austin Farrar, President of the Trustees.

 Pastoral Care Needs

If you wish to speak in confidence with a member of the Pastoral Care Team, please send an email to the office and a member will get back to you as soon as possible. The Pastoral Care Team is also recruiting a new Chair! If you are a compassionate listener, we would love to meet with you. Please email Laurie Hasty, PCT Chair, if you are interested!

Getting in Touch

with First Parish

It may take a few days to return phone messages, so email is the best way to reach all First Parish staff. Please remember that Laurie and Benjamin work part-time and may not respond to emails every day. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
