Hi Christine,

Get more information and keep up with current events by visiting Pacificmasters.org

In this issue, you will find information on upcoming swimming events and stories of interest. We're trying a new approach to the Update with news and information taking the lead. The event calendar and details are still here, just a little further down.

All eyes have been focused on the US Olympic Trials and our USMS Summer Nationals. We've been reminded of past stories, both victories and learning experiences, and can see in our young, up-and-coming champions, the promise of the future for our favorite sport.

The next Update will appear the week of July 8, 2024. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

Champs of Today and a Blast from the Past

The legacy of the Berkoff Blastoff

At the US Olympic Trials in Indiana, Regan Smith reclaimed her world record in the 100-meter Backstroke, with a time of 57.13 as her family and high school coach looked on. Coming in a very respectable second place was Katherine Berkoff, with a 57.91.

The Berkoff name is a storied one in the field of competitive swimming. Katherine’s father, David Berkoff (1988 and 1992 Olympian) is famous for his backstroke start and dolphin kick, swimming over 30 meters underwater before popping up, aptly named the Berkoff Blastoff. David did not invent the technique, but he certainly perfected it, breaking the world record three times. We do not see the lengthy underwater backstroke anymore as there is now the 15-meter underwater limit. Read how and why the rules changed.

Regan Smith and Katherine Berkoff will be among the many outstanding athletes representing the United States in Paris this summer. We understand the significance of their accomplishments and will be cheering for each and every one of them as they continue a legacy of excellence.

Special Notice

New limit on individual events at championships

Swimmers, please note that we've made some changes to registration limits for our championship meets. The entry limit will now be 6 individual events. Swimmers who enter 6 individual events will be asked to designate a 6th event in case we need to scratch down for timeline purposes.

This is in keeping with the way USMS Nationals are conducted. Our distance events (1500, 800, and 400 Frees) will still have caps on them, but the caps are higher than they have been. There will be no waitlist for these distance events.

Swimming Competition Extraordinaire

First-hand account of the Olympic Trials and the USMS Nationals

Never before has an entire city been transformed into a venue for a swimming competition. From one's first steps off an arriving plane in Indianapolis, you are regaled with super-sized imagery of competitors in action, floors surfaced with water patterns and lane lines, and a myriad of signs with shout-outs to the over 1,000 qualifiers for the 2024 Swimming Olympic trials to take place in a pro football stadium.

Concurrent with the trials, United States Masters Swimming was invited to hold our 2024 Spring National Championships in the nearby IUPUI Natatorium. Over 2,500 members registered to participate in the 5-day meet. See results here.

Indy is no stranger to orchestrating championships having done so eight times, and they put on a near flawless event. The meet ran on time, was superbly administered, and the pool was especially fast. Read more.
