SBIRT Among TNB Populations

The Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model has proven to be an effective method for identifying and addressing hazardous substance use, misuse, and substance use disorders, as well as for mitigating potential psychosocial and health problems. However, its application among transgender and nonbinary (TNB) populations remains insufficiently explored and necessitates further research. This document offers practical guidance for implementing the SBIRT model with TNB populations.

Let's Be Blunt

Driving under the influence of marijuana is considered impaired driving in New York. According to the New York State Department of Health, marijuana significantly impairs critical abilities necessary for safe driving, including motor coordination, attention, and reaction time. Studies indicate that drivers with THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) in their blood are approximately twice as likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to those who are sober. In 2018, NY reported an increase in motor vehicle accidents where drivers tested positive for marijuana. As cannabis becomes more accessible, the state emphasizes the importance of public awareness and law enforcement to combat the dangers of driving high.

Community News

We are thrilled to share that members of the YES and PACT teams recently participated in the Long Island Health Equity Conference held at NYIT on June 11th. The conference provided an invaluable opportunity for our staff to engage with leading experts and stakeholders in exploring strategies to promote health equity across our community. Attendees gained insights into innovative approaches, shared experiences, and collaborated on actionable steps to address disparities and improve health outcomes for all.

PACT teamed up with MTAC for a significant initiative on April 27th, participating in their Drug Take Back event. This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to community health and safety by providing a responsible solution for the disposal of unused medications. Together with MTAC, we helped raise awareness about the importance of proper medication disposal and contributed to a cleaner, safer environment for everyone. We are grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact and look forward to future collaborations with MTAC and other community partners.

We are proud to highlight the recent collaboration between PACT and HAP, who jointly led a bilingual Naloxone training session on May 28th at the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury. This initiative was a crucial step in equipping community members with life-saving skills to respond effectively to opioid overdoses. Participants received comprehensive training in both English and Spanish, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to administer naloxone, a critical tool in combating opioid-related emergencies. This event exemplifies our ongoing commitment to enhancing community health and safety through education and proactive outreach.
