They also have a great 3 tiered fruit and vegetable display (so cute!). 51 pieces and the 3 tiered display is $521.

Can you replicate the Melissa and Doug approach to Sales and Marketing?

Before Melissa and Doug / Lights Camera Interaction, phone sales in the specialty Toy industry failed miserably. In an effort to replicate their success, many companies have tried phone sales and have usually given up after 12-24 months.

Why were Melissa and Doug so successful? Because their sales people knew their number one job was to make a connection with who they were working with. They did not focus on the product, but rather they focused on the person.

Once they had that connection, they built on it. By taking retailers out for dinner at Toy Fair, they had helped to form friendships.

When they called, they asked how Alicia's graduation went, how Dennis is recovering from surgery, and whether Peyton picked Charleston or Savannah to get married in.

They showed that they knew you, and that they cared.

It's the same quality that I see in some of my most successful stores. The challenge is this. While you the owner may be great at this, how do you motivate your staff to create that personal connection?

Maybe it's just by reminding them "The focus is on the person, not the products."
