Solicitors, Door-to-Door Salespeople Must Have City Permit

As the weather continues to warm up, more neighbors and residents are getting outside and taking walks! This is our friendly annual reminder that anyone going door-to-door must have a solicitation permit, which is issued by the City of Oklahoma City's Development Services office.

The permit card is approximately 2 inches by 3 inches, and will have the permit number issued by OKC, their name, their address, and an expiration date. Remember: anyone trying to sell a good or service must have a solicitation permit and photo ID, regardless if they have the item in hand to sell; you are allowed to ask if they have a permit. OCPD recommends calling 911 if the solicitor does not have a permit.

An example of the card can be seen below. If a solicitor has a card, and you are not sure if it's real, it is also recommended to call for a check.

OCPD's New Mental Health Response Protocol Guide Now Available Online

The Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD) unveiled its latest crisis response initiative to police employees with the launch of the Mental Health Response Protocol Guide.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), nearly 1 in 25 adults in America live with a serious mental illness.

The 22-page guide was developed to help officers and 911 dispatchers more effectively and safely respond to people in crisis. Residents can read the guide at okc.gov/mentalhealth.

“These protocols provide employees with clear guidance to ensure optimal services are delivered to people experiencing a mental health crisis,” Police Chief Wade Gourley said. “Having a diverse array of tools at our disposal enables us to effectively aid residents in safely navigating crises and guide them toward resources that will support their path to recovery. This success is fostered by our robust partnerships with mental health professionals.”

Topics covered in the guide include:

  • Recognizing people in crisis
  • 911 call intake and diversion
  • Police response
  • Tools and resources
  • Alternatives to arrest

The guide requires police employees to document their interactions with people experiencing a mental health crisis. The information collected will identify resource gaps, demonstrate the community’s mental health needs and help OKCPD implement data-driven mental health resources throughout the City.

OCPD Program Highlight: Homeless Outreach Team

The purpose of the Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) is to ensure OKCPD remains sensitive to the unique needs of the homeless population while responding to the concerns of the greater community. HOT works with homeless individuals linking them with valuable social services to improve their living conditions thereby improving public safety.

Our mission is to impact the homeless community through positive police contact and community partnerships with the ultimate purpose of altering the homeless person’s perspective on life, and potential for getting needed services and assistance. The Homeless Outreach Team serves the community by coordinating efforts between law enforcement, local, state and private agencies that provide services to at risk homeless in the City who are living on the streets and considered Chronically Homeless.

The Homeless Outreach Team is comprised of two officers/sergeants and one lieutenant. The unit typically works Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but they periodically vary their schedule to address needs at specific times.

If you are reporting a police or public safety emergency, dial 9-1-1.
