The "O Antiphons" of Advent
Seven days before Christmas
(begins tomorrow, Dec 17)
Learn them and pray them!
The “O” Antiphons are part of the ancient and venerable tradition of the Roman Church going back to at least the eighth century, if not earlier. They are associated with Pope St. Gregory the Great. An antiphon is a short sentence that comes before or after a psalm or song in the liturgy.
The “O” Antiphons are part of the final days of Advent leading up to Christmas. They begin on December 17 and go through December 23 and come before and after the Magnificat during the Liturgy of the Hours Evening Prayer. They are also the alleluia verse before the Gospel at Mass.
December 17 – O Sapientia
O Wisdom, coming forth from the mouth of the Most High, reaching from one end to the other, mightily and sweetly ordering all things: Come and teach us the way of prudence.
December 18 – O Adonai
English: O Adonai, and leader of the House of Israel, who appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush and gave him the law on Sinai: Come and redeem us with an outstretched arm.
December 19 – O Radix Jesse
O Root of Jesse, standing as a sign among the peoples; before you kings will shut their mouths, to you the nations will make their prayer: Come and deliver us, and delay no longer.
December 20 – O Clavis David
O Key of David and sceptre of the House of Israel; you open and no one can shut; you shut and no one can open: Come and lead the prisoners from the prison house, those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.
December 21 – O Oriens
O Morning Star, splendour of light eternal and sun of righteousness: Come and enlighten those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.
December 22 – O Rex Gentium
O King of the nations, and their desire, the cornerstone making both one: Come and save the human race, which you fashioned from clay.
December 23 – O Emmanuel
O Emmanuel, our king and our lawgiver, the hope of the nations and their Saviour: Come and save us, O Lord our God.
What Are The “O” Antiphons?
The “O” Antiphons begin with different Old Testament references to the hope for the Messiah. Then, the second line is a plea for the Messiah to come. Of course, the Lord has already come at the first Christmas. Yet, during every Advent we have the opportunity to grow in our longing for the Lord who has come, who is coming, and who will come again.
In each of the antiphons, there is a traditional liturgical pattern of prayer. First, we address the Almighty with a noble title, then we give praise related to that title, and, finally, we address to God a related petition.

This Sunday, December 20, weather-permitting, is Christmas outreach time for St Antoninus. After our Sunday Mass, at 2pm, we will proceed to the Most Blessed Sacrament Friary around the corner from us (375 13th Ave, Newark) to join the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal on their Annual Live Nativity. Please take your whole family (there will be plenty of space for social distancing) to watch the play which includes live animals.
After the play, at around 4pm, we will go around our church vicinity, singing Christmas carols and give out the gifts collected from our Christmas Giving Tree to families in our neighborhood.
Come and participate in sharing the Good News of the birth of Jesus to our brothers and sisters in the neighborhood!

THE YEAR OF ST JOSEPH was proclaimed by Pope Francis last Dec 8, 2020, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
We will start the new year (Jan 2021) with the 33-Day Consecration to St Joseph!

Pope Francis on Tuesday announced a special year dedicated to St. Joseph starting from 8 December 2020 until 8 December 2021, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of St. Joseph as the Patron of the Universal Church, as well as the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady.
The Apostolic Penitentiary also issued a decree granting special indulgences for the duration of the special year to celebrate the anniversary and “to perpetuate the entrustment of the whole Church to the powerful patronage of the Custodian of Jesus.”
During this period, the faithful will have the opportunity to commit themselves “with prayer and good works, to obtain, with the help of St. Joseph, head of the heavenly Family of Nazareth, comfort and relief from the serious human and social tribulations that besiege the contemporary world today.”
Devotion to St. Joseph
The decree signed by Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, the Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary, and the Regent, Fr. Krzysztof Nykiel, notes that devotion to St. Joseph has grown extensively throughout the history of the Church, “which not only attributes to him high reverence after that of the Mother of God his spouse but has also given him multiple patronages.”
At the same time, the Magisterium of the Church continues to discover “old and new greatness in this treasure which is St. Joseph, like the master in the Gospel of Matthew who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”
Therefore, the gift of indulgences granted through a decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary by mandate of the Holy Father “will be of great benefit to the perfect attainment of the appointed purpose.”

What does it mean to consecrate yourself to St. Joseph?
What does it mean for a person to be consecrated to St. Joseph? Well, it basically means that you acknowledge that he is your spiritual father, and you want to be like him. To show it, you entrust yourself entirely into his paternal care so that he can help you acquire his virtues and become holy. Total consecration to St. Joseph means you make a formal act of filial entrustment to your spiritual father so that he can take care of your spiritual well-being and lead you to God. The person who consecrates himself to St. Joseph wants to be as close to their spiritual father as possible, to the point of resembling him in virtue and holiness. Saint Joseph, in turn, will give those consecrated to him his undivided attention, protection, and guidance.

The timing of our consecration to St Joseph could not be any better. At this time of great confusion and spiritual crisis in our families, we turn to St Joseph, the Patron of the Universal Church, and the "Terror of the Demons."
Our Consecration Day is on Feb 2, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus. St Joseph, as the father of the family and our Blessed Mother were presenting Jesus in the temple.

In making this consecration to St. Joseph, we are asking the Holy Spirit, through the patronage of St. Joseph and in imitation of him, to bring into relief the identity we received at our baptism, reborn in order that we might permanently turn our gaze to wonder at Mary’s motherhood, to the infant who grew in wisdom and strength, that by his suffering, death, and resurrection, a world is redeemed, a love unassailable definitively and forever proclaimed. Jesus, by his sacred person and flesh, has remade the family into a God-bearing manger, which holds the mystery of sonship, of true spousal self-donation, of lifelong chaste fidelity to the will of God and the glory of his name.
