Maya River | Paper Vivant

July 18 - October 15, 2024

The District Foyery Gallery (located at North Vancouver District Hall)

Maya River is a Vancouver-based sculptor whose work emerges from a deep connection to both nature and ancient traditions. Using recycled paper clay, she handcrafts tactile home decor, wearable art, and accent furniture, each piece shaped with fingertips, a well-worn spoon, and a knife. Her sculptures embody abstract forms, their organic textures inviting touch and exploration.

Bijal Patel | Everything Comes Next

July 18 - October 15, 2024

The District Foyery Gallery (located at North Vancouver District Hall)

Her work explores the journey of change and loss as layers of connecting and reconnecting to both old and new experiences of self, others and our surroundings. In her life and artwork, she discovers a sense of self from new, different perspectives for accepting those areas that cannot be controlled and exploring those areas that can, by using intentional, conscious decisions.

NEW! On the North Shore Culture Compass:

Creator's Children (2022), by Siobhan Joseph and Ray Natraoro

The north wall (Ray Natraoro) connects with the land and honours the Squamish Nation Members and Indigenous ancestors they descend from, represented as the faces in the top row. They are the guardian spirits watching and guiding the children and people of today represented in the bottom row of faces. The wavy line references the sacred waterways that served as transportation routes for the ancestors to maintain nation to nation relationships.

The south wall (Siobhan Joseph) connects with the waters of the inlet and the artist had recently learned that the area near the Village of Esla7ah, was called Salt Water. Hence her mural design honours the sea and sea life such depicting the grey whale, orca, giant pacific octopus, six gilled shark, pacific white sided dolphin, sea lion, salmon, sea otter with the crab sea urchins, and clams. The center circle design is the salmon chief (Kwus).

Artists: Siobhan Joseph & Ray Natraoro

Media: Mural
