At our last meeting, we learned a lot from Shane Wiegand (of the Antiracist Curriculum Project) about the history of redlining, both official and unofficial, in our region. Their video, "Home: Access Denied" helps to explain why much of the city's housing stock is poorly maintained and why there are so many vacancies. These factors are related to why many renters are housing vulnerable, living in uninhabitable rentals, often paying more than 40% of their income, and frequently subjected to eviction without cause. |
