Study findings for MassEcon provide rare glimpse of business location decision-making
A majority of companies that chose Massachusetts as a place to expand would do it again
According to an 18-month study entitled "Choosing Massachusetts for Business: Key Factors in Location Decision-Making," commissioned by the non-partisan economic development organization, MassEcon, and conducted by the UMass Donahue Institute's Economic and Public Policy Research group, the vast majority of companies that chose Massachusetts as a place to expand their business would do it again. This consensus is largely based on Massachusetts` innovative economy, industry clusters, and skilled workforce.
UMass Civic Initiative visits Pakistan

The UMass Civic Initiative led a trip in January to Pakistan in the interest of entrepreneurship education and cultural exchange. The trip's purpose was three- fold: to c ontinue work with the Balochistan University Partnership, to connect with Civic Initiative program alumni throughout the country, and to make new country-wide connections in the academic and business sectors. The central event was the Entrepreneurship Education Summit in Karachi. Over 70 educators, provincial government members, and business leaders convened in order to continue ongoing plans and start news ones to improve the entrepreneurial culture not only for college educators and students but also for the business sector. The group also visited the city of Lahore to continue reaching out to entrepreneurs and academic programs that support them.  Check out the Pakistan blog.
Report: Young adults' participation in the labor force declining in Massachusetts 

Research from the Institute shows that labor force participation has declined among young adults  in recent years.  There are a number of factors attributable to this decline, including increased college attendance, fewer young people working while enrolled in school, and competition with older and more experienced workers in the labor market. While some of these factors may be viewed as "positive" things, such as the rising number of young people going to college, research does show that early participation in the labor market has positive long-term impacts on young people. Head Start national center marks anniversary

The Institute, along with its partners, Family Health International 360, Zero to Three, and UCLA Anderson School of Management, recently marked the first year of oversight for the Head Start National Center on Program Management and Fiscal Operations (PMFO). In the fall of 2015, the Institute was awarded $30 million over five years in order to provide assistance to federally-funded early childhood learning programs across the US.  The PMFO contract builds on the Institute's established history of providing assistance to Head Start including, providing training and technical assistance to all or most of the New England Head Start region for over 10 years. Opportunities abound for 1,400 attendees at statewide STEM Summit 

A lifetime of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) opportunities was on display November 1 in Worcester, highlighted not only by discovery, but by re-connections to colleagues and professional networks. The event included panel presentations, plenary speakers, and exhibitors showcasing STEM initiatives. Offerings covered a broad range of topics including early childhood, K-12, higher education, and workforce & business. Attendees had the chance to peruse over 40 exhibits and choose from nearly 50 breakout sessions. The 2017 Summit will return to Worcester's DCU Center this fall.
