Upcoming Townhall Meeting Regarding Contests

Meeting facilitator: Daisy Wei, DTM

Objective: Provide context, gather info, and hear feedback from members regarding Online contests that D42 will hold each year.

Background information:

After careful consideration, the Board of Directors decided that beginning with the 2024-2025 speech contest cycle, there will no longer be exceptions granted to the Speech Contest Rulebook to allow for online or hybrid contests. This means that all contests past the club level must be conducted fully in person and adhere to the Speech Contest Rulebook, 2. Eligibility, C.11, which currently states:

Each contestant must be physically present to compete beyond the club level. Participation by audio, video, or other remote technology is not permitted beyond the club level. (Exceptions: participants in the International Speech Contest Region Quarterfinals and Video Speech Contest.)

This will offer a more consistent experience for contestants while supporting judges in clear, accurate, and unbiased judging. Additionally, District resources that may have been focused on hybrid contests can be allocated to building clubs and supporting club success.

To provide members with the option to practice competitive speaking in an online setting, a new contest type will be added. The Online Speech Contest will be a contest type similar to Evaluation, Humorous, Table Topics, and Tall Tales that can be selected by Districts. This contest type will be conducted fully online, will follow the rules of the International Speech Contest (insofar as practical), and will not proceed past the District level.

To help prepare for the town hall meeting, please fill out the Townhall Member SURVEY. The survey contains 5 questions.

YOU MUST REGISTER HERE TO ATTEND

Step Up for Leadership and Training Opportunities

Daisy Wei, DTM

D42 Program Quality Director

Are you ready to take your communication skills to the next level? Stepping into a leadership role within Toastmasters will help you practice meaningful communication and further develop your leadership skills. Toastmasters offers numerous opportunities to learn and practice leadership effectively. As a club officer, you can attend Club Officer Training, and if you advance to a District leader position, Division Director and Area Director Leadership Training are available.

Club Officer Training

  • New and Experienced Club Officers

Whether you're new to the Club Officer role this year or an experienced Club Officer, training is a fantastic opportunity to kick off your leadership journey or refresh your knowledge of your roles and responsibilities. Each Club Officer is required to attend training at least twice a year. This not only aids in your personal development but also helps you build a network with mentors and peer club officers.

  • Why Training Matters

When well-trained, Club Officers perform their duties more effectively, leading to better service for club members. This enhances the member experience, resulting in a quality club environment and increased member retention. Our goal for 2024-2025 is to have 99% of Club Officers trained.

  • Preparation for training

Please review your role in the  Club Leadership Handbook to prepare for your officer-specific training class. It's also beneficial to browse the sections for other club officers. Working as a team requires understanding each role, helping you all to effectively support your club. Bookmark or download the handbook for handy reference throughout your term.

District 42 Authors Showcase & Workshop Series

Vesna Ivkovic

D42 Webmaster/ Dispatch Designer

Dear District 42 Toastmasters,

I hope this message finds you well.

As part of my Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) project, I am excited to organize and promote the talented published authors within our district. This initiative aims to celebrate our local authors and provide valuable resources and workshops on how to start writing, publish, and promote books.

We are planning a series of events, including:

  • Workshops on Writing and Publishing: Learn from experienced authors about the journey from idea to publication.
  • Promotional Events: Showcase your published works and share your experiences with fellow Toastmasters and the broader community.

If you are a published author and would like to be part of this initiative, or if you are interested in conducting a workshop (online) or participating in an in-person promotional event, please contact Vesna Ivkovic, D42 Webmaster and Dispatch Designer.

Your participation will not only highlight your achievements but also inspire and guide aspiring writers within our community.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to working together to celebrate and promote the literary talents within District 42.

Kepler Astrologers Toastmasters (KAT) Showcase

Meghna Bhagat

What do the numbers in my birthday have to do with my personality? Kanye West’s infamous outburst at the VMA Awards could be seen in astrology. Help! Where is my cat? Wait… what? astrology can help me find my missing cat???

YES! Astrology can help answer all these questions and much more.

Join us for the first Kepler Astrologers Toastmasters (KAT) Showcase on June 4, 2024, at 12:30 pm Pacific, 1:30 pm Mountain to find out how. If you haven’t already guessed, we are astrologers and astrology enthusiasts pursuing professional development. We help members polish communication skills and secure speaking opportunities in the astrology community and beyond.

In our charter year, 2022-2023, the winner of the club International Speech Contest also won a place in the Organization of Professional Astrology OPA’s Spring 2023 Conference. Since then, the winner (me) completed six (6) more speaking engagements. Especially significantly for KAT, because of the success of this experiment, OPA extended a permanent, annual speaking spot for a KAT contest winner.

This OPA opportunity inspired us to create a more astrologically focused contest, with astrological luminaries as judges. Thus, the KAT Showcase was born in our second year. In addition to selecting the OPA winner, we hope that the KAT showcase participants will be invited to speak at the organizations represented by these renowned judges.

To claim one of the six (6) showcase speaking slots our enthused members entered a preliminary contest—11 intrepid astrologers participated. Selected in a tight race by member votes, the winners will present 5–7-minute speeches. Our club sponsor, and premier astrology education institution, Kepler College is promoting the showcase to their entire community, and it is likely to attract a wide audience. A debut both for our speakers and our club!

Dear fellow District 42 Toastmasters, your support of our club has meant so much to us. We are honored to share this momentous launch with you and invite you to come to celebrate our debut with us. Don’t worry… while some parts of each presentation will be Astro-speak, you don’t have to know astrology to enjoy the showcase. Who knows maybe you’ll uncover a whole new perspective.

Register HERE, and feel free to share widely with your favorite astrology enthusiasts.

Hope to see you there!

An Evening with D42 Champs!

Club Recognition Activities

Brian Fegan, DTM

Hello Everyone,

Our DTM project committee is eager to gain insights from you. We are curious about the unique ways your club acknowledges, celebrates, and rewards members for their exceptional contributions.

Specifically, we are interested in how you acknowledge members who:

  • Help their peers
  • Strengthen communication
  • Boost your club's visibility
  • Promote teamwork
  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership
  • Take on special projects
  • Support other clubs
  • Engage in commendable activities

We aim to enrich our DTM project, which involves:

  • Reviewing the variety of rewards provided by District 42 and comparing them with incentives in other districts
  • Examining the strategies used to implement these incentives

Your input is essential for the success of our project. If your club has innovative or impactful recognition approaches, we are eager to hear them!

Please share your responses with me by June 14, 2024. You can reach me via email or phone.

Thank you for your cooperation!

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

New Club Sponsor? Mentor? What’s the Difference?

Mary Schoendorfer, DTM

D42 YLP Chair

While both of these roles provide vital support for a new club and both are used towards the DTM award, they are quite different. The Sponsors help the new club get started meeting, then get the required elements completed for Toastmasters International and chartering; the new club Mentors provide the meeting support and key education that will translate into a successful club today and into the future. Both are vital to the new club! There are 2 Sponsors and 2 Mentors assigned to a new club, 4 Supporters in total.

Here is a Mosaic Masters Toastmasters Club president's testimonial.

U-Shane Taylor is grateful to those leaders who have been the supporters for his new Toastmasters club: Mosaic Masters. In his words:

The Toastmasters support team has been a valuable resource for the Mosaic Masters Toastmasters club. They guided us through the infancy stages of the club, on our way to becoming chartered. The club was structured in such a way that we were poised for success. To date, the members of the team continue to play an integral part in our continued success. We are highly appreciative and grateful for the teams’ continued support as our members strive to develop their leadership and public speaking skills.
