"Irmandade" Artist Talk

Afro-Brazilian artist Ibraim Nascimento will describe his search for the community and brotherhood/sisterhood which was disconnected in the Afro-diaspora during slavery. October 14 is also Ibraim's birthday.

At the exhibition's September opening Nascimento, center, symbolically connected his audience members with strands of red thread as an analogy for connection and reconnection. Irmandade is the Portuguese word for brotherhood, the bond of kinship. At left is April Frazier and right, Merian Sherrod.

Second Thursday Workshop

Join the Conversation

Ernest McMillan, veteran human rights activist, and CAC Executive Director Michelle Barnes will lead a community conversation Saturday, October 28, at 3 p.m. at The Collective, 4101 San Jacinto, Suite 116. Attendance is free.

McMillan will sign his book “Standing: One Man’s Odyssey through the Turbulent ‘60s.”

A Quilt Fit for the Mayor

Hastle Murray, master quilter, designed and machine made this quilt for Mayor Sylvester Turner. The quilt was commissioned by the Houston Informer Foundation and accepted by Mary Benton, Director of Communications at the City of Houston, on his behalf at a ceremony at the El Dorado Ballroom in early October. It will be formally presented to the mayor at a City Council meeting in the near future. The photo on the left depicts the quilt top, and the one on the right shows the underside.

Teaching the Teachers

Teachers from the Rhodes School of Performing Arts spent some professional development time in classes at The Collective.

an Emmy, a Tony or a Golden Globe,
but we have some pretty good stories to tell you on YouTube. Check out what we’re doing in the community to increase art education and appreciation and how we support many talented artists and crafts folks.
