‘CAN’T STOP WON’T STOP: A HISTORY OF THE HIP-HOP GENERATION’

 By: Jeff Chang

From the beginning of the Boogie Down Bronx all the way to the birth of The Source magazine, Chang’s tome offers well-written prose with an eye toward social justice. He forewarns in the intro that this is “a nonfiction history of fiction, some mystery and certainly no prophecy,” leaving room for “many more versions to be heard.” Published in 2005, this classic is required reading for an overview of the culture.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Alika Edmonds

WMU Senior Attends

Point Guard College

Alika Edmonds, WMU senior attended the Point Guard College, in Seattle, WA, August 14-18. During the camp, the board of staff and directors of the Point Guard College selected him as the number one captain/draft pick of 22 teams and 168 campers. His contributions to the camp were evident when he received the Gold Standard band, which signifies leadership excellence, from the camp director Matt Mcleod for promoting the camp. Mcleod stated, "If Alika has sat down and spoken with you, said or done anything throughout the camp to make you a better player/person, raise your hand." In response to that statement, 75% or more of the camp attendees raised their hands. During the closing ceremony for the event, Edmonds shared a poem of gratitude he wrote called " Dakota's Dream," inspired by Dakota Patton's story (the co-director), in addition to his own experiences, to a crowd of over 200 people. From this experience, Edmonds said that this camp taught him to be a more effective leader and he learned life lessons that he will carry with him forever.

Check out the photos below from Point Guard College. To hear his poem, click the link below.
