Hello Paula,

Work while you study! It's important as an international student you follow the conditions and requirements stated on your study permit and understand the current policies in place.

If you plan on working in Canada, you will need to get a Social Insurance Number (SIN), open a Canadian bank account, and update your resume to Canadian employer expectations. Read on to find out more!

Work and Study in Canada

International Student Working Under Study Permit

Here are some important things to remember when studying in Canada.

All international students must adhere to the conditions stated on their study permit.

To maintain your status and Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility, you must

  • Be actively pursuing your studies and continuously enrolled in your degree program at Lakehead
  • Have maintained full-time status during each academic term of your program

To be eligible to work, you must meet the conditions below:

  • The condition on your study permit states that you are allowed to work
  • You need to be enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program
  • You need to have a valid SIN

If you meet all the conditions above, you can work while studying:

Eligible students (with remarks on their study permit, enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program, with valid SIN) can work while they study:

  • 20 hours per week off campus while enrolled
  • Full-time during scheduled breaks*
  • There is no limit to on-campus work

Graduate students do not have summer breaks and are continuously enrolled throughout their studies at Lakehead.

*scheduled breaks are during reading weeks, winter break and other stat holidays. Please review the important dates calendar for this information.

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

If you meet the eligibility to work, you must obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN) from Service Canada to be eligible to work in Canada. To obtain a SIN, we recommend you go in person to a Service Canada office location. When you visit a Service Canada location, you must have both your valid passport and study permit.

The Service Canada office in Thunder Bay is located at 975 Alloy Drive. You can get there directly from Lakehead University by taking the City Bus #9 (Junot to Intercity) route.

Your Social Insurance Number will be valid until your study permit expires. If you need to renew/extend your study permit, you will also need to extend your SIN after receiving your new study permit.

Service Canada will be on-campus to enroll students for a SIN in the International Student Lounge on our Get It Done Day - August 29th!
