Hello Katie,

BIG NEWS!

Have you heard? We have officially broken ground on our new branch building off of 24 Road in Grand Junction!🎉 This location was determined by a poll of where our members would most like to see a new branch. Thank you for journeying with us as we expand and grow to accommodate and best serve our amazing members in the Grand Valley.

Coloramo stands for Colorado Raw Materials Office. When Coloramo first began, 10 people were needed to charter the credit union, and a sponsor. It was signed to initially limit membership to federal organizations and contractors within the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) Compound in Grand Junction only...

James Nollie Watts, Coloramo's first president, wrote this about the founding of Coloramo:

"The organization meeting was held in Bob Langridge’s office, the chief chemist...As we were using Bob’s desk, he signed the charter application first and I signed second, as I was sitting next to him, and so on, until 10 of us had signed. After the papers were approved by the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions (now the NCUA), we started operations on June 8, 1953.

"The first ten membership books were issued to the employees signing the charter in the order in which they signed. I had Membership #2 for many years. The credit union was initially open from 1 – 3 pm, two days a week, with its office in the North Guard House. As it grew and as their space was needed for other things, it was moved into every building on the compound, including an addition on the steam plant, except for the sampling plant, chemical laboratory, and the garage building.

"During the first week, all of the charter members went knocking on doors asking people to join so we would have something to loan out. At the end of the week, we had $1,000 on deposit and $1,000 loaned out!"

It is impressive to see the growth from our humble beginnings on the AEC compound, to 910 Main Street, 516 28 Road, Fruita, Orchard Mesa…and soon a fourth location for Coloramo.

We were honored to have with us at the groundbreaking ceremony family members of James Nollie Watts and Bob Langridge. There will be two streets surrounding our new location which will honor the first two charter members of Coloramo. We will dedicate the street names to Robert Langridge and James Nollie Watts!

The log cabin which served as Coloramo’s first location, now called the Atomic Legacy Cabin, is a fantastic free-to-the-public museum that showcases the history of uranium mining and processing on the Colorado Plateau, as well as Grand Junction’s unique contribution to the Manhattan Project and the Cold War.
