Volunteers Support People Experiencing Homelessness in New Ways
BEDS services have evolved, but volunteers’ critical role in our work remains unchanged. Learn more about how one of our volunteers has carried on his mission.
Paul Zylstra and his wife, Nancy, began volunteering 17 years ago at Calvin Christian Reform Church. He began as a shelter volunteer and was a site manager for nearly a decade. With the outbreak of COVID-19, he took on new duties.
Alongside many others, he delivered lunches during lockdowns, supplied meals to clients in motels, and made food boxes for individuals and families throughout our programs. His work protected them and their communities during the worst of the pandemic.
But Paul does more than deliver food. “I take time to visit with clients and make sure they’re OK. I feel fulfilled bringing food to people who are hungry,” he describes. “It’s a way we can show love to our neighbors. I still remember one client who said she loved me in return every time I brought food to her.” Like that client, we value his continued commitment.
