Financial Summer Fun

Michigan Jump$tart Coalition wanted to thank each of you for your commitment teaching financial education whether it was in person or virtually. With summer right around the corner, this is a good time to reflect on the school year and setting goals for the next school year.

You will find resources that can help you with your money goals during the summer months. Summer can bring differences to your budgets and reaching your savings goals. The focus this month is on building savings and learning about the different type of bank accounts and the questions that may come with finding and opening a traditional or online account.

Professional Development Opportunities

We are building a Calendar of professional development opportunities and other events. Please let us know if you have information to add. Below you will find several opportunities throughout the month of June.

During the summer, Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF) will have several opportunities to register for 3-week, 9 hour courses to become a certified in specific personal finance topics. You can learn more here about the dates for each of the cohorts and topics.

During Teacher Appreciation Month, CNBC ran a special that you can watch called "Invest in Teachers: Ready. Set. Grow" in partnership with Council for Economic Education and Next Gen Personal Finance to present a virtual teacher's lounge where financial experts offered answers to teachers personal finance questions.

Get Banked

Finding and opening the right bank account can bring a lot of questions. Some questions that come up include is will my money be safe? Does it cost anything? How accessible will my money be? Will I earn anything on my savings?

Those are all important questions. Below you will find resources that can help answer a lot of those questions along with help start those conversations with your students through different checklists, guides, interactive games, worksheets, articles, and discussion prompts.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The FDIC is an independent agency of the U.S. government that protects you against the loss of your insured deposits. They have created a checklist that can help you learn about the different type of accounts and how to find banks near you.

Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF). NGPF has created curriculum focused around checking accounts. You can learn more about how checking accounts work, avoiding fees, and an introduction to online banking

Fool Proof Foundation. Online banking is expanding and you may have questions about how safe and secure your money is. Here is an article that helps answer some of those questions and questions you can ask before setting up an account.

EverFi. EverFi has created a digital program called "Money Moves: Modern Banking & Identity Protection" to help develop strategies for managing their finances through online and mobile banking tools. The tool has created an interactive simulation for students to learn to make wise decisions that support their current and future financial well-being with an emphasis on safe and responsible use of virtual payment apps as well as online fraud prevention.

Student Scholarship Winner

The Michigan Jump$tart Coalition's 2021 student scholarship application portal closed June 1st. We will be reviewing all the applications during the month of June and announce our two winners by the end of June.

Jump$tart National Conference

Return, Reset, and Recommit to Financial Education.

The Jump$tart National Educator Conference will be held November 6-8, 2021 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. This is an all-scholarship event for teachers and the deadline to apply is August 20, 2021. You can learn more here.

Michigan Jump$tart has the ability to send two teachers from the State to the conference. Please email us if you would be interested in attending the national conference. Send us a message at info.mijumpstart@gmail.com before June 30 with why you would benefit from attending the conference.
