School is officially out for the summer...at 3:25pm today! But that certainly does not mean that the learning process is over. While a classroom setting is provides the equivalent to a firehose-method of learning, each of us can appreciate that we learn new things every day.
My daughter recently sat down to play checkers with a formidable opponent and at the end of the game she was in tears because she lost. While Elizabeth is bright, Ed out-smarted her. This was a wonderful learning opportunity for both parties. The younger of the two was enlightened by her defeat. And though tears were shed, she has a better understand that she must keep playing to improve upon her checkers mastery.
Ed was given the opportunity to bestow wisdom. He offered instruction during the game of play and explained certain actions that would lead to his opponents loss. But most importantly, he allowed her to fail. Ed won because he has played far more checker games and has developed the skillset necessary to win.
"The master has failed more times than the beginner has tried." ― Stephen McCranie
A trying effort, might fail. But if you never fail, you've probably never tried. This summer I encourage you to play checkers. No matter your age there will be a lesson learned! Do something new or do something for 10,000th time - and each time you do it, you will learn.
We're all students. A few of us are masters.
But we're all failures, together.
