Reading & Relaxing!!!

I'm enjoying the month of September as I have no travel planned and I am filling my days with catching up on work, planning new future trips, going to doctor appointments for routine check ups and taking some time to read and relax. Next month puts me on a whirlwind schedule right into next year so I'm relishing some quiet moments. For those of you with kids in school and college, don't wait until the last minute to plan those school vacation trips. Everything fills up very fast so don't be disappointed. Remember to get your Flu Shot...we did!
Ataxia Support Group
Alaska Cruise
was a HUGE SUCCESS!
Several members of the Western Washington Ataxia Support Group, their group leader and others from around the country joined us on RCCL Ovation of The Seas the last week of August. We had a lovely group of new clients including many first time cruisers. As always, the group got along very well and everyone made new friends. Most participated in excursions and enjoyed whale watching, a visit to Mendenhall Glacier, a salmon bake, a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railroad and a beautiful day at Butchart Gardens. This was my first time sailing on Ovation of The Seas and I was quite impressed. It is a lovely ship with an amazing crew and staff.

Fold & Go Wheelchair Travel Review
I received a huge response from my blurb about buying a new Fold & Go Wheelchair last month and I know many of you are anxious to know how my first plane ride and cruise went with this chair. In a word, SUCCESS! I traveled alone to Seattle and the only mobility equipment I brought with me was my new power wheelchair. Fold & Go provides all the details about the chair that the airlines need on their website. I printed this out and brought it with me. I also have a laminated version of this attached to the chair. The Southwest agent was very happy to see this and I had no problems whatsoever. The batteries remained in the chair. I rode it down the jetway and easily removed the joystick and put it in my carry on. I then explained to the ground crew how to fold the chair. They thought it was very cool! The only hiccup was they forget to put a gate check tag on it so upon my arrival in Seattle I went down to baggage in an airport wheelchair and there it was with oversized baggage. I made sure that did not happen on my return flight. I found the chair to be very comfortable and easy to maneuver. I have two hooks on the back frame where I can hang my backpack, shopping bags and more. There is also a small storage area under the seat. I love that the seat is 20" high which makes transfers when I'm not wearing my prosthetics quite easy. Most of the other chairs on the market (there are several) have a lower seat and those make me feel uncomfortable. Using the Fold & Go on the cruise ship was a real pleasure. Transfers were safe and secure even when using the shower. A real plus is the clearance under the seat for managing the ramps used on the ships for embarkation and debarkation. This chair does NOT bottom out so I don't have the need to try and get up while the crew gets the chair over the difficult areas on the ramps. The chair manages inclines very well and will go 16 miles on a charge. All in all, I was very happy with my purchase and satisfied with my decision to buy the Fold & Go. As I stated in my previous article about this chair, this was the correct chair for me and meets my needs very well.
Here's A Travel Tip For YOU....
pills closeup_ Transportation Travel
Most of us travel with medications and here's some important info to consider next time you leave home. First of all, carry a list of all medications with you and give a copy to your travel companion. To bring your meds in their original container or to pack them in a multi-day container is a question to consider. I use a multi day container and my husband brings his in their original bottles. He says when he sorts them out, he always forgets at least one drug. When packing in one of the plastic containers you run the risk of the little sections popping open and mixing up your pills or losing them. I always make sure I put the container in a baggy and seal it tightly. You need to put the pill bottles in a baggy as well. Better safe than sorry! Either way, the airlines don't care so the choice is yours. Just pack carefully and don't leave any important drugs at home.
