"Is this a music venue or a church?" Glover grinned early on. And for stretches last night, mostly due to Glover's impassioned showmanship, the answer wasn't entirely clear. From the edge-of-stage, microphone-less crowd work during "Friend of Mine" to the late-set almost a cappella "Hope She'll Be Happier," which had Glover (and most in the room) in tears, Glover didn't just honor Withers' work, he elevated it.   -- Grateful Web' s Mike Mannon reviews The New Stew at The Ardmore Music Hall 5/07/16

"Each of these songs had a moment - in some cases, three or four - when a band member or two proclaimed himself in charge of whatever was going to happen and gave in to the powerful, uplifting or haunting nature of this music. The result was the birth of an interesting new band and a true sleeper show: a pleasantly jammy evening was expected, but a transcendent musical experience was delivered." --Chad Berndtson, Live Review from Brooklyn Bowl Spring 2016

"After so many magical moments in the evening, it is hard to pick one highlight, but 'Lean On Me' appeared to be the most anticipated song of the night as Withers fans new and old hugged it out during this spirit-lifter. The extended 'call me' refrain was repeated almost a dozen times as the audience and band came together to complete a touching duo of slower tunes." --NYS Music, Ben Boivin

Meet The New Stew, a "super group" if you will, of a few very fine musicians from all genres of music. This project was formed with one focused goal, to pay respect to those recordings that influenced the players and to re-imagine recordings that they feel should be heard and experienced in a live setting.
The first homage in Richmond will be paid on 1/27/17 when the group will make its debut at the Music Hall at the Capital Ale House playing the classic  Bill Withers - Live from Carnegie Hall album from start to finish. It is more than a labor of love, it is a way to allow the public to experience something again or in many cases the first time and reconnect with this classic recording in a way that hasn't been possible in more than 4 decades.

The history of Bill Withers - Live from Carnegie Hall
His performance at Carnegie Hall on October 6, 1972, was recorded,
and released as the live album Bill Withers, Live at Carnegie Hall in the following year.
Recorded less that a year and a half since Withers quit his day job to pursue music full time, the then rising soul star commands the historic New York stage with veteran poise and power. In counting years as a live performer he was a novice but his ability to transform the hallowed venue to a tiny club and hold the audience's attention like a conversation, a feat that heightens the intimacy of the performance and accentuates the intensity of the songs.
Withers' along with his band are able to move fluidly, stretching out the songs beyond their initial recorded times, the subsequent jams take the audience on a ride the studio recordings were not able to do.
The album ranks at number 27 on Rolling Stones' list of the 100 greatest live albums of all time.
Live from Carnegie Hall stands as one of the greatest live recordings of all time.
