LAZARUS FUND SPECIAL OFFERING

The Lazarus Fund Offering, one of the six Presbytery special offerings we collect at Northmont each year, is received during the month of February. The fund, a Pittsburgh Presbytery initiative, started during the economic struggles of 1984, but the need continues today. It makes grants of direct aid available to families in crisis, who are struggling to pay for basic survival needs. 70% of the undesignated funds provide emergency assistance to session sponsored families and the remaining 30% provide economic and employment development assistance. Designated funding supports the Caring Program for Children. The fund has no overhead and is administered through a special committee of the Presbytery. Please consider helping families in need by contributing to the Lazarus Fund. Checks can be made out to Northmont UP church, marked for the Lazarus

Fund. Thank you.

During the season of Lent you will note that the music and tone of worship are generally more somber. For instance, last week, we said goodbye to Alleluia until Easter and we also heard the last soprano descants in our congregational hymns until Palm Sunday. At the same time, penitential aspects of the season will be highlighted through the music. During Lent, the introit will be Attende Domine, a traditional Lenten chant that is Mozarabic in origin, and each Sunday a different verse of the text, known as the Lenten Prose, will be sung. We will add the singing of the Lord have mercy to our confession time. The words will be sung in Greek: Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy), Christe eleison (Christ have mercy), Kyrie eleison. This text, along with that of the Trisagion, which we will hear on Good Friday, are the only portions of the liturgy that have remained in Greek throughout history. As such, using the Greek reminds us of just how ancient our faith and its liturgy are. I wish you a holy Lent.

Meet a choir member

Patricia Reavel, professional soprano

Patricia Reavel moved back to the Pittsburgh area in December 2022, and is delighted to join the Chancel Choir as a soprano section leader. Patricia earned her Master’s Degree in Piano Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. She has served as the staff accompanist for Chautauqua Institution and regularly performs as a piano and vocalist for retirement communities. Patti has taught piano since age 12 and is a local piano instructor at several facilities. In her free time Patti loves walking her dogs, drawing portraits, and spending time in the summer in her house in Erie, PA.

Plea for help: Adult Handbells practice on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30. We are desperately in need of more ringers if we are to continue ringing. If you would like to join us, please contact me at stephen@northmontchurch.org. We usually ring once a month. A strong commitment and an ability to read music are needed. We will teach you how to ring if you haven’t. Handbells have been a vital part of Northmont’s music ministry over the years. It would be a shame to see this legacy end. Please consider joining us if you can.

If you are interested in knowing more about singing in the choir, please contact me at stephen@northmontchurch.org. Chancel Choir practices 6:30 - 8:30 most Thursdays and sings for worship throughout the school year. Requirements are a pleasing voice, the ability to read music, and a good sense of humor.
