Ask the Dentist
Q. I was told that I should get sealants on my child's teeth. What are they and are they really necessary?
A. Sealants are a polymer resin that is brushed onto and cured upon the chewing surface of your child's adult teeth. This is an excellent procedure for the purpose of preventive dentistry. Your child's teeth have many grooves on the chewing surface. The sealants act as a protective coating. Without sealants, food particles will accumulate in these grooves and the tooth will begin to decay.

Greetings!
Halloween is just around the corner and we are once again partnering with Operation Gratitude with our candy buy-back program. We purchase the candy from any child who wishes to participate, and then we donate the candy to Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude then takes the candy it receives and passes it along to U.S. troops who are in harm's way. The troops use the candy when they interact with children in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you know anyone who would like to participate, please send them our way.

Are Electronic Gadgets Preventing a Good Night's Sleep?
Ninety-five percent of Americans use some kind of technology an hour before they go to sleep, the National Sleep Foundation found. Sixty-one percent of Americans use a laptop or computer an hour before they go to bed. Generation Z and Generation Y were most likely to engage in that activity with 55 percent and 47 percent, respectively of people in those groups saying they use a computer before bed.
Generation Z and Generation Y members are nearly twice as likely as baby boomers to play a video game an hour before trying to go to sleep.
The light from screens on notebooks and phones could prevent your body from producing melatonin, the hormone that is produced naturally in darkness and helps regulate sleep. Reading exciting news articles or playing games keeps your mind very active, making it difficult for you to relax and be 'ready' to fall asleep.
Losing sleep can make you more prone to serious health conditions. One study shows not sleeping for more than 20 continuous hours, then getting behind the wheel of an automobile can make you as impaired as someone who's legally drunk!
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2010), over 25 percent of Americans experience occasional sleep deprivation. A chronic sleep-restricted state can cause fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness and weight loss or weight gain. It adversely affects the brain and cognitive function.

Fun Dental Fact:
The average woman smiles about 62 times a day! A man? Only 8! Kids laugh around 400 times a day. Grown-ups just 15.

Insurance Reminder:
Did you know that each year insurance companies make millions of dollars because patients put off necessary and preventive dental care? Many people who have dental insurance do not realize that their plans provide up to a certain dollar amount annually. Consequently, some people are not using all of their dental benefits even when they still have uncompleted or preventive dental needs. Thus, the insurance revenues allocated to pay dental claims for many patients are never used, and unfortunately, those dollars cannot be carried over from year-to-year. The bottom line: What the patient does not use, the patient loses.
Give us a call today, and together let's make sure you are in excellent dental health. We'll still be able to schedule the treatment you need this year, and not let those benefits go to waste.
