Librarian's Corner

Now that the summer reading challenges have come to a close, our team is prioritizing essential collection maintenance and program planning for the upcoming fall semester. This includes several crucial tasks such as cataloging new materials, organizing existing resources, and reviewing collection development policies to ensure we are meeting the needs of our patrons.

Additionally, we are planning a diverse range of programs and events—–whether you're interested in technology, arts and culture, personal development, or wellness, we've got a range of options that cater to all your interests. Plus, you'll have the chance to meet and network with like-minded individuals. Don't forget to check out our events calendar frequently for more information on what's in store for you!

As temperatures rise, the library is the perfect place to beat the heat. With air conditioning and a comfortable atmosphere, you can stay cool while enjoying our vast collection of books and resources. Plus, our free Wi-Fi and computer access make it the ideal location for remote work. Visit us today and escape the dog days of summer.

Farewell & Welcome!

We would like to take a moment to bid farewell to Debora Crosby, who has been an integral part of our team for many years. Debora is stepping down from her position as the program coordinator; however, she is not stepping away from the library. She will continue to volunteer as a Preschool Storytime reader as well as a Spice Club leader. Please join us:

Wednesday, August 23, 5-6 pm

for a reception for Debora

At the same time, we are excited to welcome Brittany Henry to our team. With her extensive experience and expertise in the field, we are confident that Brittany will make a valuable contribution to our library. We look forward to working with her and achieving great things together.

We love getting customer feedback! Here is what one library patron had to say:

As someone who has been using the Loomis Library since the 80's, it is an honor to be asked to write about my experiences with these fantastic programs. I hope they continue into the future, for I find them to be an invaluable addition to the lending collection of the Loomis Library.

California State Library Parks Pass

There is really no other way for me to explain, but this program, this one item, was and is an absolute game-changer for my family's weekend trips this year! I'm still a little shocked that a program like this exists because it's just so awesome. Thinking back at the past several months, I can safely estimate that my family has, at a minimum, saved $200 on park entry fees. Outside of visiting Folsom Lake for a quick dip or Auburn State Recreation Area for a leisurely hike, we have used the pass to learn and rediscover the history and beauty around us. Coloma, Folsom Powerhouse, Malakoff Diggins, and Lake Oroville to name a few. We made sure to have the pass with us when we headed to Fort Bragg and used it to explore the redwoods (which made the Park Rangers' day when we showed them the pass because they've heard of it, but hadn't seen one in use!) and then to relax at the state beaches. At the time of writing this we just checked it out again because we plan on heading up to North Lake Tahoe for the day to get out of the heat. We plan on stopping at the Donner Memorial then off to Kings Beach State Recreational Area. Just having the pass available at the library really expands the thoughts and possibilities of where you can go. Never ignore the beauty of your own backyard, and with this pass in hand, you won't.

ZIP Book Program

Have you ever wanted to read a book, but was crestfallen when the library didn't have it in its collection? Well, the ZIP program is the answer to that. As a homebrewer, more often than not, books about brewing or biographies by pioneers of the industry are simply not on anybody's radar or not popular enough for a library to spend their limited funds to obtain. But with the ZIP Book program, the library was given a grant, separate from their budget, to order such book requests. The process is so simple. You put in a request for something that is not currently carried, and before you know it the book has been ordered and is being sent directly to your home! When you're done, you return the book to the library and it's added to the shelves where it can be checked out by all. By using this program I have been able to keep up with the current techniques and recipes and grow my confidence in the hobby I love, with the after effect being that the Library now has a wonderful collection of brewing books for all to borrow. I sincerely hope this program continues because it benefits all who use it as well as those who don't.
