Indy Lights rookie promoting anti-texting and driving campaign in May
MIAMI, FLA. (May 13, 2013) - Firestone Indy Lights title contender Gabby Chaves continues his pursuit of promoting safer driving habits in Florida and across the U.S.A., on Tuesday (May 14), when he takes part in the Broward County Commission proclamation ceremony declaring May 'Take 5 To Stay Alive. Don't Text & Drive' Month.

The 19 year-old Chaves, who is a Broward County (Florida) resident and the 'Take 5 To Stay Alive - Don't Text & Drive' campaign spokesperson will be part of a presentation by Broward County Commissioners Chip LaMarca and Lois Wexler. Taking place at the Broward County Governmental Center lobby (115 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in front of a display showcasing the anti-texting and driving program, Chaves will be joined by Broward Regional EMS Council Vice Chair, Dr. Fred Keroff, and State Senator Maria Sachs receiving a proclamation declaring May as the 'Take 5 to Stay Alive- Don't Text & Drive' month.
Before the presentation, Chaves - Safety Ambassador of the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety and Sustainability - will meet with media and campaign backers to discuss the program and do interviews in the Commission Chambers ( 1:15 pm to 2:00 pm, Room 422 of the Broward County Governmental Center).

Chaves returns to his office - behind the wheel of an Indy Lights car - on May 23, with the opening practice run for the Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Qualifying takes place later in the day, followed by the premier event on the 2013 schedule on May 25 - Carb Day - as part of the prestigious 97th Indianapolis 500.

About Gabby Chaves:
Widely considered one the premier up-and-coming drivers in the junior formula car ranks, Chaves has made a name for himself by winning races and challenging for championship titles. The American first got behind the wheel of a race car at the age of 13, winning a Skip Barber Racing Shoot-out scholarship. In his first full-season of competition, the former Easy Kart, Stars of Karting and Florida Winter Tour champion captured the Colombian Grand Prix Formula Renault 2000 title and finished as the series runner-up in the Skip Barber Eastern Regional Series. Building on this success, Chaves went undefeated in the 2006-07 Skip Barber Regional Southern Series, winning all 10 races. The teenager continued his winning ways one year later, extending his Skip Barber Racing victory streak to 17 consecutive victories, leading the Skip Barber National Series before making the switch to Formula BMW Pacific competition. Chaves returned to the top of the championship charts in 2009, winning the final Formula BMW Americas title with five wins and podium finishes in every race. In 2010, Chaves raced full-time in Europe, winning the Italian Formula 3 Championship Rookie of the Year award. The teenager made his GP3 Series debut in 2011, earning five top-10 finishes. Chaves returned to North America in 2012, competing in the Mazda Road to Indy-backed Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear, where he finished as the title runner-up with two wins. This season, the teenager is competing in the Firestone Indy Lights series with multiple champion Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.
