Friends,
In 2o13, Genuine Georgia moved into our current home - the Towne House Building on the corner of Main and Broad Street in Downtown Greensboro, GA. The Towne House Building has over 150 years of storied history, having seen the rise and fall of the Confederacy, the devastation of the cotton crop by the boil weevil, the economic hardships of the Great Depression, and the strengthening of the Greensboro community in the many years following.
The story of the Towne House building begins in mid-1800s when Memory Statham built a hotel on the corner of Broad and Main street that he operated with his wife and children. After his death in 1856, the women continued to run the hotel through the Civil War, providing the community with a meeting place for women to make bandages, blankets and other military provisions.
In 1889, Mrs. Statham sold the land to Mr. E.A. Copelan, who eventually built the current building that stands today, known as the Copelan Bank. Over the years, the building has housed drug stores, barbershops, stores, and restaurants, and after sitting empty for several years, it officially became our home in 2013.
