About the Author:
Randy Leffingwell wrote and photographed his first book, "American Muscle," while still on staff at the Los Angeles Times. The book examined Times’ publisher Otis Chandler’s growing fascination with muscle cars. "American Muscle" published in September 1990 and the entire process fueled a love of book production that ultimately led Leffingwell to leave the Times in 1995. By then he had published "Porsche Legends," his first on the Porsche marque, and six other titles as well.
Since 1990, Leffingwell has authored more than 60 titles. Most of his projects are transportation-oriented. Over more than 30 years, these included a dozen titles on Porsche ranging from general overviews – most recently "Expect the Unexpected: Porsche 75 Years, "and "The Complete Book of 911 – Every Model Since 1964" – to deeper explorations in "Porsche Turbo" and "Porsche 911: 50 Years." During this time he has regularly traveled to Germany and has interviewed more than 200 engineers, stylists, racers, and managers.
While also tackling such diverse subjects as John Deere tractors, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, West Coast Lighthouses, Barns, and others, he admits he is almost addicted to the Porsche story. He is historical editor for 000 magazine and for Porsche Panorama. And for the past decade, he has been writing this encyclopedic history of Porsche’s motorsports.
Leffingwell lives in southern California.
