Starts Right Here . . .
Whether it be with our corporate partners who provide meaningful work experience for our student interns; institutions of higher learning that provide mentors and tutors for our students; or it is fellow educators from our sister school that come together with our staff to share ideas for student success: Collaboration is the name of the game!

This first of what we hope to be many collaborative sessions between the faculty of Christ the King Prep and that of Cristo Rey Brooklyn took place Wednesday, August 30th. San Damiano Hall of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in midtown Manhattan was the venue. Cultural Proficiency was the topic. The energy and enthusiasm to share ideas was palpable.

A beautiful Morning Prayer opened the day, followed by the timely and inspirational presentation by Rev. Ralph Rivera, SJ. Both formal discussions and and more informal sharing during meal times led all to agree on the value of working together. The wine and cheese reception on the roof patio of the parish house was the perfect ending to a memorable day.

Last week our students returned to school from summer break. On Tuesday, to kick off the first day back, the school community gathered for a Prayer Service with scripture passages that encouraged students to be strong, wise and courageous; to be ready for anything and everything and not to be afraid.  In his address to the student body, CtK Prep principal, Fr. Gregory Gebbia, OFM, provided a way for all to achieve this. There are four important words that need to stick with each of us which can be remembered easily using the acronym  G.A.S.P.  Ganas, a Spanish word, is the passionate desire to make more of oneself. Arete, is a Greek word that means excellence. Struggle is good and necessary for growth. Positivity helps your mind and heart absorb.

The week ended with the celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit. Our president,  Fr. Robert Sandoz, OFM, encouraged everyone to think about the gifts that are right before us provided by the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, knowledge, wonder, righteousness, right judgement, courage. The keys to unlocking these gifts and all that can be achieved lies in ganas, arete, embracing struggle and a positive attitude.   We need to collect our strengths and to set our sights on a year of accomplishment . . . a year of winning and
G.A.S.P. a year of achievement!
