2019 Pyros Malbec Valle de Pedernal Appellation
93 Points, Rank #35 Top 100 of 2023, Value Pick of the Week - Wine Spectator:
"Exudes aromas that foreshadow what's to come, with a central chalky-slate presence and fresh violet and mountain herb nuances underneath. Features generous raspberry and plum flavors that are fresh and pure, buoyed by lively, chalky acidity. Ends with finesse and fine tannins. Drink now through 2030. 3,000 cases imported." - AR (Jun 2023)
93 Points - Vinous:
"The 2019 Malbec Pyros Appellation from the Pedernal Valley was 85% aged in new barrels for 12 months. Hailing from a vineyard that takes special care of native flora, the lovely, slightly liquer-like nose presents notes of licorice, touches of amaretti, sour cherry and plum aromas with hints of herbs and thyme. Quite smooth on the palate with slightly reactive, chalky tannins, it delivers moderate freshness and good flavor at the end. This is a new style for the house the Pedernal Valley as a whole, adding to an extra dimension." - Joaquin Hidalgo (Nov 2022)
92 Points - Decanter:
"From high altitude vineyards at 1,400m in San Juan's Pedernal Valley. Aromas of dark fruit and dark spices with herbal hints. The palate is marked with a seam of fresh acidity: juicy with plenty of ripe dark fruit, edged in spice and with ripe tannins. Well made and enjoyable." - Julie Sheppard (Aug 2022)
91 Points - Tim Atkin, MW:
"Using grapes grown on sand, silt and limestone soils, this is a firm, structured, intensely chalky Malbec from Pyros’ own vineyards in the Uco Valley. Aged in French and 20% American wood, it’s sappy, dense and savoury, with toasty aromas and damson, black olive and blackberry flavours."
90 Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"The 2019 Appellation Malbec has intense aromas of honey and beeswax with an herbal, creamy and spicy twist, probably from the 12 months in French and American oak barrels. It's juicy and ripe without excess at 14% alcohol. It has fine, chalky tannins. Better with food." - Luis Gutierrez (Nov 2022)
