Order of Worship

Dear Friends,

“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof; the world and they that dwell within!”—Psalm 24

This is absolutely one of my favorite bible passages about God and God’s relationship with and to all that which God made—including the big blue marble in space we call home. A home we all know that is rapidly changing in part, due to human activity. Our living on the earth. One of our newer ministries at Pilgrim is centered around environmental justice and caring for God’s creation. Sunday we will celebrate Creation and what a gift it is by dedicating the solar panels that were installed on our roof in the past months. Panels that convert God’s sunshine into power; power enough for the church, for the parsonage (the house I live in) and with some left over too. Thanks to all who made this happen and thanks to the anonymous benefactor that underwrote this project. The earth is the Lord’s. We are mere stewards of this gift. May we use it wisely and well. See you Sunday!

Peace, Pastor John

Members of the Solar Committee were: Peter Liffiton, Ron Jantzen, Fritz Reinhart and Jim Campbell; design and installation of the solar array was by Solaris Renewables of Burlington, MA:

On Youth and Children’s Sunday we try and share as many names as possible of our 2023 Pilgrim Church graduates: from high school, college and grad school. Is your child among those grads? What Is the Good Life and

Where Does God Fit In?

This summer, beginning Sunday, June 18th, at the 9 am service, Pastor John will explore the idea and the ideal of “a good life” and talk about where God and faith integrate into this vision. The series is based in part on the book, “The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Study on Happiness” by Marc S. Words for Reflection............Colin Bell, “Creation Care and the Gospel”

“The church is probably the world’s largest civic society organization—present in virtually every nation and every community and having an immense impact on how people think. If the church can harness this influence to inspire people to care more for creation and to act upon this care,  then the world will be a very different place.”

Welcome

Call to Worship (adapted from Psalm 148, Scott Bullock, alt.)

Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens. Praise the Lord from the heights!

People: Praise God, all the angels, praise God, all the heavenly hosts!

L: Praise the Lord, sun and moon, praise, all you shining stars!

P: Praise God you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!

L: Praise the Lord from the earth, mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars!

P: Rulers of the earth and all peoples, sovereigns and all leaders of the earth: Praise God's name above all other names.

All: Let us praise the name of the Lord, for God's name alone is exalted; God's glory is above earth and heaven. Praise the Lord!

*Opening Hymn #251 - Holy, Holy, Holy!

Confession of Sin and Assurance of Pardon

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Welcoming of New Members

Leader: Will you strive to support this church with your time, talents and money and with your participation in the worship life of our church? Do you seek to become a full and active part of our community, and will you continue to deepen your relationship with God in Jesus Christ? If so, answer “I will, with God’s help!”

Leader: Now, as a sign of our oneness in Christ and this church, let those that are able, please stand and join in a unison reading from “The Covenant of the Evangelical Church of Sherburne” (1835).

*The Covenant of the Evangelical Church of Sherburne

In the presence of God and this assembly, we now solemnly vow the Lord Jehovah, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, to be our God, the object of our supreme affection, and our portion forever. We cordially acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ as our only Savior; and the Holy Spirit as our Sanctifier, Comforter, and Guide. We humbly and cheerfully devote ourselves to God, in the everlasting covenant of his grace; and we consecrate all our powers and faculties to his service and glory. That we will give diligent attendance to his word and ordinances; and that we will seek the honor and interest of his kingdom. We join ourselves to this Church of Christ, to walk with its members in charity, meekness and love, and to strive for its edification and purity. Amen.

Sacrament of Holy Communion

Communion is received by intinction today.

The congregation is invited to come forward and be served.

There is also the option of taking a pre-packaged communion set from one of the Deacons. Participants at home are encouraged to assemble their communion elements.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Pastoral Prayer

Offering

Traditionally, the time for offering is when most members and friends in church contribute financially to the church. Many people now give with a mailed or electronic check, or other methods. Yet we retain this ritual to remind us that we are asked by God to respond to God’s generosity with our generosity. Thank you!

Offertory Anthem: My Song In the Night, arr. Benjamin Harlan

O thou, in whose presence my soul takes delight, on whom in affliction I call,

My comfort by day and my song in the night, my hope, my salvation, my all!

The roses of Sharon, the lilies that grow in vales on the banks of the streams;

His cheeks in the beauty of excellence blow, his eye all invitingly beams.

His voice as the sound of a dulcimer sweet is heard through the shadow of death.

The cedars of Lebanon bow at His feet, the air is perfumed with His breath.

Dear Shepherd, I hear and will follow thy call; I know the sweet sound of thy voice;

Restore and defend me, for Thou art my all, in Thee I will ever rejoice. Amen

Joseph Swain (1762-1796)

*Doxology

Praise God from whom all bless-ings flow,

Praise him all crea-tures here be-low

Praise him a-bove, ye heaven-ly host,

Praise Fa-ther, Son and Ho-ly Ghost. Amen.

For Visitors and Parents of Children and Youth

Our Nursery for children six weeks to 36 months is open during Sunday Service and offers loving care while parents are in worship. Staffed by a professional child-care adult and student assistants from our congregation, it is offered 9:30am to 11:30am September through June and from 8:45am – 10:15am during the summer. You will find our nursery on the first floor in the children’s Christian Education (CE) wing, toward the back of the church. Please go through Fellowship Hall to the small hallway and keep going straight. The nursery will be the first door on the left once you enter the CE wing. Sign in your child and leave your name and cell/text number in case we need to reach you. Children from Pre-K through 7th grade should remain upstairs in the sanctuary for the beginning of the service. After the children’s message from our Pastor and CE Director they will be invited to go downstairs with our teachers where we will have a lesson, a craft project and a time of fellowship together.
