November 2022

Go to the page before you shop and select "Senior Community Connections". A small donation will be made to SCC from Amazon for each purchase you make at NO cost to you. Please share this quick way to contribute to SCC's mission with your friends and family!

It's almost time for our biggest fundraiser of the year! The Giving Tree Village, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Davidson, provides important funding for our non profit. Support for SCC comes from Christmas tree votes, and we are counting on our village for another successful year! See the dates below to mark your calendars:

  • Giving Tree Village Setup: November 26th
  • Tree Decorating: November 26th – 30th
  • Tree Lighting: December 1st
  • Christmas in Davidson: December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd

Did you know? People who are age 72 or older can contribute up to $100,000 from their IRA directly to a charity and avoid paying income taxes on the distribution. This is known as a qualified charitable distribution. It is limited to IRAs, and there are other exclusions and considerations as well. Please ask your qualified CPA for more information and the most current restrictions.

Meet Rebecca Haun

“I am always looking to meet people and make connections.”

Becca walked for over two hours in deep snow from Arlington Towers in Washington DC to the White House so that she could wave as John Kennedy rode by in 1960. She wanted to be part of a major historical event.

On her first day of Trans World Airlines training about 60 years ago, Becca met Linda and Shay. They are still best friends today. Becca and Shay both lost their husbands in 2009. Since then, they began a tradition to travel together every Christmas. This year they will visit Asheville, North Carolina.

Becca tutors kids every week and volunteers time playing Cribbage with two other SCC members.

When Becca moved to the area, she very quickly found Senior Community Connections. She’s attending events, utilized volunteer transportation services, and received technology help. And if you have the pleasure of spending time with her, you’ll surely meet a new friend.

"[SCC] helped me in ways I never even thought."

SCC's 5th Birthday Party

We had a lot of fun and reason to celebrate on a beautiful fall day. A special thanks to the Sweeneys for hosting, Sue Winter-Hallman, the entire Program Committee for planning, and the members and volunteers for helping make it one to remember! We are elated to celebrate how far we have come and looking ahead to all of the possibilities of the future at Senior Community Connections. Hooray!

Souper Supper

Thank you to member Janet Mckee for hosting a successful fall "Souper Supper." Sometimes the work of SCC looks like giving rides, technology assistance, and a little gardening help. But very often and perhaps most importantly, it looks like this: connection and fellowship and finding and friending people who laugh with us, share experiences with us, and remind us that we are never ever alone. Tis' the season for warm soup and warm hearts. Come share a bowl with us soon!

National Night Out
Thanks to all who visited us at National Night Out last month! We enjoyed seeing new people and familiar faces from the community. Thanks for spreading the word about SCC's services and volunteer opportunities. It was a beautiful night to enjoy the park festivities! We hope to see you at an upcoming event, please stop by and say "hello!" We would love to chat with you.

“There is music in the meadows, in the air —

Autumn is here;

Skies are gray, but hearts are mellow…”

— William Stanley Braithwaite, “Lyric of Autumn”

Social Bridge: A bit rusty? No problem.

Join us for a Social Bridge. "Two components of bridge promote healthy aging and therefore make it an ideal game for seniors. Bridge provides 1) a cognitive workout and 2) an opportunity for social interaction. The combination of these two key components sets bridge apart from many other leisure time activities for fostering a happy, active, and healthy brain."-The Second Half: A Lifelong Learning Institute.

We're looking for players who may be rusty....even very rusty...but know the basics to play. If we have a table of four or more we'll set a time and day soon to meet at Beth's house to give it a try. Contact Beth at

Yoga & Meditation: Tuesday & Thursdays at 9am

Make time to take care of yourself. Join our volunteer, Laurie Walker, for meditation and/or yoga online. In addition to whatever is going on in your personal life, we are all living in the middle of so many converging issues – health, geopolitical, environmental, and more. If we are going to thrive – we have to increase our resilience. Regular yoga practice is a powerful vehicle to do just this.

You will find tools of breath, movement, and meditation that promote a sense of cal resilience.

  • Yoga classes are on Zoom Tuesdays and Thursdays from at 9:00 a.m. EST.*
  • Meditation Circle meets Tuesdays at 10:15 EST.*

SCC members receive complementary access to the courses. Email Laurie for more info. at

For many SCC programs, reservations are not required, but are appreciated. To RSVP or for questions email Sue Winter Hallman at

Writing Visibility

When thinking about writing and addressing holiday cards or crafting letters to send to friends and family this year, consider your writing visibility:

  • Make sure you have adequate light from the side (in order to avoid a glare)
  • Use paper that has thick, darker lines
  • Use a ruler that is darker than the paper color to guide writing

We could not operate without the generous support from our volunteers, community partners and donors. Below are a few ways you can get involved.

Become a Volunteer

As summer unfolds we have an increased number of service requests from our members. Would you be available to drive a member to an appointment or join them on walk? No ongoing commitment necessary, just volunteer as you are able. Reach out to Ellen at today to join our roster.
