âI, representing the Basketball Hall of Fame, am honored and humbled to be chosen as the Honorary Chairman of the 2024 Worldâs Largest Pancake Breakfast. This event is a bedrock event in the city that brings together and unites all in our community to enjoy a fun and very tasty day as well as the company of each other,â said John Doleva. âThe annual pancake breakfast is yet another event and happening that puts Springfield on the national map showcasing the city where the game of basketball was invented among so many other firsts. The coordination and support of this event by Judy Matt and the Spirit of Springfield staff is beyond outstanding and the cadre of businesses and organizations supporting the event is remarkableâthis is a winning team!! I hope everyone puts Saturday May 18th on the calendar and all should plan to arrive hungry!!â

Let's Beat Battle Creek
For many years, Springfield, Massachusetts, went spatula to spoon against Battle Creek, Michigan, the self-proclaimed cereal capital. It started with the challenge to have the Worldâs Longest Breakfast table and then to have the Worldâs Largest Breakfast. Over the years, the title exchanged hands with Springfieldâs celebration held in May to celebrate Springfieldâs founding on May 14, 1636, and Battle Creekâs Cereal Festival being held in June.
|
âThose that remember the competition still ask, âDid we beat Battle Creek?â said Spirit of Springfield President, Judy Matt. âI always said âyesâ even when we were not sparing for the title. It is a pride thing, and we have pride in our city.â
Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, âThere is nothing like some warm fluffy pancakes drizzled with butter and maple syrup, a couple pieces of nice crispy bacon, and a cold fresh glass of OJ to wash it down with. As the birthplace of the cereal industry, I understand why Battle Creek sticks to what they know with their Cereal Fest. But here in the City of Firsts, our beloved Springfield, we are always ready for a challenge and are proud to work together to serve tens of thousands of attendees a nice hot breakfast of pancakes and bacon to celebrate our Worldâs Largest Pancake Breakfast each year along with Springfieldâs birthday. Come on down to Main Street on May 18th as we once again #BeatBattleCreek with our Springfieldâs Worldâs Largest Pancake Breakfast!â
|
As the history states, in was in 1987 that Springfield set up the longest table and switched to cereal. The table was 3,700 feet long and stretched from Union Street to Gridiron Street. That year, Battle Creekâs table was the same length, but Springfield called a fowl since the table was not in a straight line. To bring the community closer together, Springfieldâs table was shortened.
