The History of U.S.S. Reliant in the Star Trek Universe

The USS Reliant (NCC-1864) was a 23rd century Federation Miranda-class starship operated by Starfleet. In 2285, the Reliant was commanded by Captain Clark Terrell. While under his command, the ship's prefix code was 16309.

The Reliant was launched in 2264. In 2267, the Reliant underwent a layover at Starbase 11. The ship's registry number was seen on a chart indicating the repair status of several vessels. In 2285, the Reliant served at the disposal of Drs. Carol and David Marcus during their research for Project Genesis. While Marcus and her team worked from the Regula I space station, the Reliant searched for a lifeless planet to serve as a suitable test site to satisfy the stringent requirements necessary for stage three of the Genesis Experiment.

On Stardate 8130.4, the Reliant approached the planet Ceti Alpha VI. During the scan of the planet, one of the Reliant's dynoscanners detected a "minor energy flux" on the surface on what seemed to otherwise be a prime location for the experiment. Hurried by the growing impatience their unsuccessful mission bore upon them, Captain Terrell and his first officer Commander Pavel Chekov transported to the surface to investigate the energy flux, hoping that it was something they could "transplant" in advance of testing.

The landing party, however, instead discovered a group of exiles, led by Khan Noonien Singh. Khan and his followers quickly captured the two Starfleet officers and informed them that the planet Reliant was orbiting was not Ceti Alpha VI but actually Ceti Alpha V. Khan then took control of Terrell and Chekov through the use of Ceti eels and successfully hijacked the Reliant, marooning her crew on the planet's surface. Having learned of the Genesis Device, Khan pursued acquiring the secrets of the device that the Reliant was contracted to work for and took the Reliant to the Regula I space station.

Unable to get what he desired from the station crew, Khan used the Reliant to intercept Admiral Kirk and the USS Enterprise.

In an ambush, the Reliant caused severe damage to the engineering section of the Enterprise, but Khan was unable to revel in his victory because the Reliant itself fell victim to a counter-ambush from the Enterprise after its crew managed to partially disable its defenses by accessing them through the Reliant's prefix code.

The attack caused moderate damage to the Reliant, including the loss of photon torpedo control and the ship's warp drive. Despite the damage, the Reliant escaped and returned to Regula where it hid behind the planetoid while making repairs and awaiting the next opportunity to engage the Enterprise. Khan took up the pursuit shortly afterwards when hailed and taunted by Kirk into the Mutara Nebula.

After completing repairs, Khan discovered that the Enterprise was not as crippled as he was led to believe and gave chase when he discovered the Enterprise making a run for the nearby Mutara Nebula. Despite having the tactical advantage over the Enterprise, Khan ultimately lost the battle due to his lack of strategic experience operating a starship. The Enterprise was able to take advantage of this weakness by outmaneuvering the Reliant and critically disabling it with phaser bursts and photon torpedoes, destroying much of its upper weapons pylon and finally its port nacelle.

The Reliant was ultimately destroyed inside the nebula by Khan's detonation of the Genesis Device. The crew was rescued from Ceti Alpha V shortly afterward by the Enterprise.

McLaren MP4/4 1988

After their earlier release of 1/12th scale McLaren MP4/4, Meng now adds a 1/24th scale version to their lineup. The upper body is a single piece that can be removed to show off the internal components. The front wing detaches and can be displayed separately. There are photo etched and fabric safety harnesses. Decals for both drivers, as well as metallic and carbon fiber decals.

The Kit

Meng's latest 1/24-scale model kit of the McLaren MP4/4 from 1985 comes with photo-etched parts, waterslide decals, carbon decals, and metal decals. Decals are included for car no. 11 and car no. 12. The front wing and the upper body are removable, and a display stand for the upper body is included.

The Aircraft

The McLaren-Honda MP4/4 is one of the most successful Formula One cars of all time. Powered by Honda's RA168E 1.5-litre V6 turbo engine, and driven by Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, it was used by McLaren in the 1988 season. It was one of the few new single-seaters introduced that season, with most teams, like Ferrari, Lotus, Arrows or Tyrrell using evolved versions of the previous season to focus on the development of new single-seaters for the 1989 season, when the use of turbocharged engines would be prohibited.

Honda thus changed its partner in F1, ceasing to equip Williams and starting to motorize McLaren single-seaters, whose TAG-Porsche engines had become obsolete.

The car was designed by American engineer Steve Nichols, with Gordon Murray, as technical director, in charge of liaising between the drawing office and the production section.

The combination of the MP4/4 chassis with the Honda engine became one of the most dominant Formula One cars ever built, winning all but one race of the 1988 season (the one held at the Monza circuit), as well as all but one of the pole positions (that of the GP held at Silverstone) and, of course, won both titles, with the drivers' title going to Ayrton Senna, with 8 wins to the 7 achieved by his teammate Alain Prost.

The 501st TRS was the JASDF’s only Recon Squadron. It was formed in December 1961 and uses the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker as it emblem. In 1972 the JASDF decided to replace their RF86F with 14 RF-4Es and formed a detachment at Hyakuri AB to handle the new aircraft. The first F-4Es were numbered 6901- 6914 and began arriving throughout 1974 and 1975. For operation over the water 6901, 6905 and 6913 were given a special Ocean Blue scheme while converted F-4EJ and F-4EL Kai were painted in green/gray Forest scheme.

An illustrated history of the American-built destroyers and frigates supplied to the Royal Navy under Lend-Lease, which played a crucial role in Britain's war in the Atlantic.

As U-boat attacks on Britain's vital sea lanes increased in ferocity, and Royal Navy warship losses mounted, the United States passed the Lend-Lease Act, the cornerstone of America's wartime role as armourer to the Allies.

Naval historian Angus Konstam here offers an account of the Royal Navy's Lend-Lease destroyers and escorts. The first batch were 50 World War I-era 'four-stacker' destroyers, in a deal sealed by the transfer of several global British bases to the USA. These warships were immediately recrewed, refitted and pressed into service in the Battle of the Atlantic. These ageing destroyers were followed by over a hundred more Lend-Lease warships, many of which were built especially for British service in American shipyards. Their arrival helped tip the balance in the hard-fought war against the U-boats, while others were used to fulfil other crucial wartime missions.

With detailed ship profiles of the major classes, a cutaway of HMS Campbeltown (of Saint-Nazaire raid fame) as it appeared in 1941, and superb battle scene artwork, this is a comprehensive look at a crucial aspect of the Battle of the Atlantic.

The Tank

At the beginning of the 1968 Tet Offensive Communist forces overran the ancient imperial capitol of Hue in South Vietnam. U.S. Marines stationed at Phu Bai airbase south of Hue were ordered to lead the assault to retake the city. Backed up by M48A3s, crewed by fellow Marines, the ‘Grunts’ fought their way back into the city and street-by-street, house-by-house slowly but steadily gained the upper hand. During much of the battle foul weather hampered the use of close air support and thus the firepower of the M48A3s 90mm gun was essential. The sheer bulk of an M48 also allowed the Marines to advance behind the armour of the tank as together they eliminated the enemy.

This particular USMC 48A3, ‘Charlie Four-One’ is nicknamed ‘Witch Bitch’ and comes complete with a full body Marine Tank Commander armed with CAR15 carbine and a “head ‘n’ shoulders” Tank Driver figure. Each model comes in its own sturdy, full colour, presentation box.

Notice: Just 200 of each of these USMC M48A3s are being produced. And so if you’re serious about your ‘Vietnam’ collection one or both of these great tank models will provide your ‘Grunts’ with some very valuable fire support!

So, there you have it, we've slid into the second half of the year and things like pre-orders are really picking up. As I noted at the beginning, a number of those pre-orders that are still active can be found directly below this section. So, if you've been on the fence or waiting to pull the trigger on something you don't see in the main body of the newsletter, never fear! There's a good change you can still see it down below in our new "Pre-Order Spot".

Don't forget that there's a Sprue Cutters meeting at 6pm on the first and third Tuesdays of each month (the next one is, July 16th at 6:00pm): and the AMPS meetings on the first Saturday of each month. We have regular Magic groups, and further out there will be a couple of D&D events already being planned in September.

And now for something completely different...

Yes, it's true. There's a soon to be released officially licensed Monty Python RPG available for Pre-orders now. They claim that no knowledge of Role-play gaming OR Monty Python is necessary to play the game. However I doubt that most folks reading this newsletter have at least a passing familiarity with one or both of those subjects. It's a mix of midiaeval mirth and mixes in all manner of other Monty Python characters, monsters, coconuts...and even the French. However, there's been no definitive mention if "Ralph the Wonder Lama" or any "Unladen Swallows" are included.

It is by no means a comprehensive manual for running imaginative, Mediaeval-themed role-playing games lovingly ripped off from the works of Monty Python. Betwixt these firm yet supple covers, one shall find everything one needs to experience the joy of Mediaeval study, from character creation and factions to ready-to-run quests and monsters including the French! One need not be familiar with Monty Pythons work, nor is experience with role-playing games required.
