UCC Leaders Call to Action

Nashville School Shooting

β€œThere is something deeply hypocritical about praying for a problem you are unwilling to resolve.” ~ Miroslav Volf, Public Theologian

Every child deserves to make it through the school day alive.

The officers and national staff of the United Church of Christ mourn with those who lament the needless deaths of Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, William Kinney, Cynthia Peak, Katherine Koonce, and Mike Hill, violently killed at The Covenant School in Nashville, TN.

We grieve for and with the families and friends of those who will never come home again. We lament the tortured thoughts and death of one who lost their way to love of themselves and others. We decry our complicity with providing legal and easy access to weapons no one needs. And we grieve a Congress that lacks the conviction to place the safety of our children and adult citizens above political aspirations.

The 7 Deadly Sins of White Christian Nationalism: A Call to Action

A Book By Carter Heyward

Dear local clergy and lay leaders,

Our Justice & Witness Ministry team has purchased eight copies of Carter Heyward's The 7 Deadly Sins of White Christian Nationalism: A Call to Action.

These books are ready to be picked up and passed around our conference in preparation for Heyward's coming to NH late this summer. We ask that you consider going to the office and taking one of these, reading it and passing it along to one of your NHCUCC comrades. These are labeled and ready to be passed around our state! If you have been wondering how to make some racial justice waves, look at Heyward's book. It is extremely engaging and is sure to challenge.

Best,

Rev. Sammy Holland on behalf of the Justice & Witness Ministry of the NHC

REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS

β€Š

Our teachers and children. God, as we mourn yet another school shooting we pray with hearts cracked open in despair. Help us O Holy One. Help us to see a way forward. Help us to prioritize lives over violence, children over guns, your ways of peace over the ways of the sword. Help us O Holy One. Keep our children safe. Keep our educators safe. Keep our schools sanctuaries where learning and growing and trust and joy may be experienced by the most beautiful and vulnerable of all, our kids.

O God, in your tender mercy, Hear our prayers
