How and/or when did life as a farmer, rancher or homesteader begin for you?
My husband and I are both city peopleā¦we never even had dogs growing up. Iām talking townhouse kids who go to public school. I always dreamed of the country and a big old house and an orchard and sheep and chickens and aprons. I just wasnāt sure it would ever really happen and it was so different than how I was raisedā¦so it was an organic progression, thatās for sure. Iāve always sewn, and put up jam, and grown tomatoesā¦and we even managed to start keeping chickens on the down low in our backyard the size of a postage stamp in town. My Grandma, who was at home with us like a Mom and was raised during the depression, still had a lot of the old ways, even though we lived in...

The Gateway Farm
Two farm kids fell in love and settled their roots into Bristol, Vermont on 350 acres and established The Gateway Farm in 2014. A passion driven diversified farm specializing in the long tradition of Vermont maple sugar making, but also pure birch syrup, and pasture raised meats. Owners, Trent and Abby Roleau, with their three young children (soon to be four), focus on ensuring the highest quality products without compromising the integrity of their land and animals. Abby stayed home full time on the farm after third child was born, to focus more on raising their children, expanding their maple business to ship products nationwide, and raising beef, pigs, chickens, and holiday turkeys for their on-site farm stand. Establishing a personal connection with each customer near and far in hopes to make business personal again, giving a sense of knowing where your food comes form, and in hopes to bridge the gap between farms and families, one family at a time.

In 2014 we left our city lot for our current 2-acre farm outside of town. With dreams of growing the bulk of our own food, we also started handcrafting our own herbal medicines & teas. Our family of 6 was gathered from across the world through adoption and we love working & schooling together. Our products are a reflection of our belief that God placed us as stewards of the land and that food is our best medicine. We hope that you enjoy not just loose leaf tea, but also our whole real food recipes & herbal
education. Paul, CeAnne & The Rest of the Farmhouse Crew.

Valentine Heart Seed Treats ~ Lisa Steele
|
Valentine's Day is right around the corner which of course prompted me to come up with a chicken-friendly heart-shaped treat for our flock.
They were a big hit with all of our chickens and so easy to make!
And if you don't raise chickens, the wild birds will love these treats too.
Valentine Heart Seed Treats for your Chickens
To make these Valentine heart seed treats, I used a variety of my chickens' favorite seeds including sesame, sunflower, pumpkin and flax.
Pumpkin seeds are thought to act as natural wormers, flax seeds add beneficial omega-3s to your chickens diet and to the eggs they lay, and sunflower seeds are high in protein. I also added some dried grubs..

Involving the Kids ~ Farm to Table Mama
|
"You can't have the family farm without the family."- Gilbert K. Chesterton
Roots run deep for American families and our farms, that's why as a country we've been able to keep passing the torch down through generations. The majority of farms in America today are amazingly, still family owned and operated.
We cannot separate our love for the land and love for family...they are one in the same. When we successfully sow seeds of love and passion for agriculture within one of our own, it is a dream come true.
Although we can never guarantee our children will end up catching the farming "love bug", we can do our best to get them involved on the farm at a young age. We can gift them...

Goat's Milk Soap ~ Stoner Family Farm
|
Hi, I am Julie Stoner from Stoner Family Farms.
My husband and father-in-law have been raising sheep for 20+ years in NW Indiana. In 2014 Ken & I had a vision for a small, side business and thus Stoner Family Farms was born.
My motto is āUse as Much from the Farm as Possibleā. From bones and organs of our harvested animals to beeswax from our honeybees, we try to use it all. I started milking goats 2 years ago as a supplement for our baby lambs. I had a large amount of milk leftover that summer so I started to find ways to use my frozen supply. Naturally, goatās milk soap was on my list to try. I spent 2018 making soap and giving it away as gifts to family & friends. After good reviews I started selling my soap at the local farmers market in June 2019 and opened an Etsy shop in August of 2019.
When I got the following review this fall I knew had and publish it around Valentineās Day.
āMy hubby and I have been married for 30 years and shower together every day. We love good smelling, healthier soaps and yours have been lovely. Thank you!ā
My new slogan might need to be Stoner Family Farms goatās milk soapā¦Keepinā Marriages Strong since 2019!
My combination to make a sudsy- hard bar of goats milk soap:
- Lard
- Shea Butter
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Goats milk
- Sodium Hydroxide
- Fragrance

Processing Farm Hemp ~ ScarpFarm
|
Happy February! February is my favorite month! It holds two very special days for me ~ my birthday and Valentineās day. Here on the farm we are still busy even though harvest season is long gone. We are looking ahead to the new growing season and ordering all different types of seeds. Dreaming of Spring, finds us planning the hoop house set ups and getting ready to prepare soil. Meantime, there is plenty to do with the last of 2019ās harvest. We saved some specially tended hemp to make candies with this year. When the growing season is over in the fall we cut down the hemp plants and hang them to dry in a temperature controlled area. When they have just the correct amount of moisture left we grind the hemp in preparation for CBD extraction. Once the hemp is ground it undergoes a week long process to extract the full spectrum CBD distillate. This is done using a CO2 extractor. This machine uses pressurized carbon dioxide to pull CBD from the hemp. The CBD distillate is then what we put in our delicious candies. They come in packages of different colors and fun flavors and would be a perfect treat for your Valentineās Day sweetheart.
We welcome you to the wonderful world of Farm Hemp & the many products this plant produces. Follow us along on our hemp journey!
