THE CORNERSTONE

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Having trouble viewing The Cornerstone? View this email as a webpage in your browser.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Accompanying this note is the new weekend Mass schedule we announced last week, which will begin on July 6, 2024. I am grateful for the input and advice I received from the parish staffs, the joint Pastoral Council, and many parishioners in comments and feedback from the two surveys that were sent out. My goal was to create a schedule that the two assigned priests could manage if need be. I am grateful that we will continue to have weekend assistance from Fr. Ron, our two Samoan priests who help at Holy Cross, and with the addition now of Fr. Matt Fish, who will be living at the Holy Cross Rectory for the coming year.

The most important thing we do as Catholics is to celebrate the Sunday Mass. Coming together as the family of God, to worship and praise Him, and to build up the community of faith are what we need to be about. May this always be our focus! Please continue to pray for our new “Parish Family #36” as we come together in a new way beginning in July, as well as all the new parish families throughout Western Washington.

Blessings,

Fr. David Mulholland

Pastor

Partners in the Gospel

We are in the welcoming stage of the Partners in the Gospel strategic pastoral planning effort across the Archdiocese of Seattle, which aims to revitalize and renew our local Catholic Church in Western Washington.

To help parish families with the transition, parish liaisons have been assigned and trained to support parish families in the process of becoming one parish. Learn more about them and the transition process in the most recent Partners in the Gospel Update.

The Prayer Intention for June

For our new parish family of Saint Patrick, Holy Cross, and Saint John Vianney, that we may truly become one family of faith, focused on Christ and proclaiming his Gospel over the coming years.

Why support the Annual Catholic Appeal?

The Annual Catholic Appeal supports vocations in Western Washington, helping men like Fr. Kyle Rink, pictured above, and women discern the call to religious life. Fr. Kyle was ordained on June 1 at St. James Cathedral and celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Patrick Church the next day! View photos and a video.

If you gave last year, please consider increasing your gift by 5% this year. If you did not give last year, would you consider a gift of a dollar a day— $365? The Archdiocesan average gift is $515. Gifts of any amount are welcome, and your gift will significantly impact many lives in Western Washington!

Read Archbishop Etienne's most recent appeal letter and learn more about how your Annual Catholic Appeal gifts support and positively impact our ministries and change people's lives, like the seminarians featured in the Seattle Archdiocese Annual Impact Report, including recently ordained Fr. Kyle Rink.

VOCATIONS

A Prayer for Fathers

Happy Father's Day to our earthly fathers and figures, spiritual fathers, priests and deacons, and heavenly Father.

God our Father,

You have created and called us your own in your wisdom and love. Bless our fathers, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.

In moments of joy, rejoice with them. In times of struggle, give them your courage and perseverance. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor and appreciate them always with a spirit of profound respect.

May the example and prayer of St. Joseph, Patron of Fathers, inspire them to live their vocation with courage. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrating Fr. David

In honor of our pastor's 22nd ordination anniversary, we asked a trivia question about him in last week's edition of The Cornerstone and on social media. The true statement is in bold.

  1. His grandmother knew he'd be a priest.
  2. He threw a 98 mph fastball at Cheney Stadium.
  3. He sang a solo Christmas carol in a high school play.
  4. His dad was sure he'd be a history teacher.

Celebrating Fr. Ron

Thank you to the many volunteers who helped prepare the special celebration of an extraordinary priest, including Knights of Columbus, Holy Cross Tacoma, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Blessed Court of the Narrows, and the St. Peter Chanel Samoan community.

Please keep Fr. Ron in your prayers as he responds to God's call and fully enters senior priest status.

Celebrating Barbara Bolaños

The parish and school community celebrated Principal Barbara Bolaños' 20-year dedication of vocation to Catholic Education at a Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, followed by a reception with friends, family, and students, including guests from her former school, Holy Family School Auburn.

Mrs. Bolaños took the opportunity to honor Fr. David Mulholland's on the 22nd Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. He celebrated his Mass of Thanksgiving 22 years ago at Saint Patrick Church, where he is now the pastor!

YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS

Choir Camp

Did you know the International Federation of Catholic Youth Choirs, Pueri Cantores, is coming to the Pacific Northwest?

With 32 federations comprising 70,000 young singers worldwide, Pueri Cantores is the international student choral organization of the Roman Catholic Church. Its mission is to evangelize and catechize choristers through music, aiding them in growing in their faith and rooting them ever deeper in the Church.

In the US, the American Federation organizes choral festivals and masses for parish and school choirs, ages 9-18, in cathedrals and other churches nationwide. As a partner of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), it also provides professional opportunities for music teachers and no-cost music education resources for the nation's 6,000 Catholic Schools.

The newest member organization, Pueri Cantores Tahoma (PCT), will begin offering free choral and liturgical skills and leadership in the fall of 2024.

However, the summer PCT CHOIR CAMP, open to rising 4th graders through recent high school graduates, will provide a taste of PCT with a one-week choir intensive culminating in celebrating a Saturday evening Mass and mini-concert. Singers do not have to be enrolled in a Catholic school, so bring your friends.

Scam Alert

Scammers pretend to be our pastor, Fr. David Mulholland, parish staff, and Saint Patrick Catholic School teachers.

They ask for your help, inviting you to respond to a text or email because they are in a meeting or can't talk on the phone. If you respond, they ask you for gift card contributions to a worthy cause. These scams are happening across the country.

When in doubt, contact the school or parish office directly to verify the legitimacy of any request you receive; do not respond to, forward the original message, or click on links in the message. Learn more
