A Message from NCFA Executive Director,

John Hatcher

Last week the NCFA held its first board meeting of 2024, where we had an opportunity to review our strategic plan goals and discuss our priorities for the year.

We also had the privilege of inducting nine new members to our board, as well as recognizing our outgoing executive committee and board members.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Nancy Thompson of Weyerhaeuser for her leadership this past year and look forward to our continued collaboration together. We welcome Rob Elliot of Pactiv Evergreen as our new Chairman of the Board. A big thank you to all our board members for their service to the NCFA. You can find an updated roster on our website.

I hope to see many of you at our Western Regional Meeting next week!

Forestry Course & Forest Worker Credential Coming to NC

The NCFA has been collaborating with ForestryWorks® and NC FFA to create a high school forestry course called AN53 Natural Resources II - Forestry. Upon completion of this course, students with a passing exam grade receive a Forest Worker Credential.

We are happy to report that our credential for this course has been approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction!

The course is being implemented in NC schools for the 2024-2025 school year. Since this is our pilot year, we welcome the support of our members as we continue to reach out to the education community to generate interest in adopting this curriculum into high schools across the state!

If you are interested in being a support resource for teachers or would like additional information, please email Abigail Ridge (aridge@ncforestry.org).

SFTE Applications Due Friday, March 1!

The Sustainable Forestry Teachers Experience (SFTE) is a summer professional development workshop for North Carolina educators providing opportunities to explore all aspects of sustainable forestry in North Carolina. If you know any teachers that would benefit from this experience, please share this opportunity with them! Applications are due this Friday, March 1, at 5:00 p.m. More details can be found on our website.
