Social Drivers of Health

How Education Impacts Health

We are in our third month of focusing on the Social Drivers of Health (SDOH), those factors beyond our clinic walls that can adversely affect a person’s health. When we go ‘upstream’ to address things like housing stability and employment, we make lasting changes that can improve people’s health. That’s health equity. April is devoted to Education Access and Quality.

Education provides people with the ability to earn a living that meets their basic needs, and access to quality healthcare and housing options in clean, safe neighborhoods.

Education > Economic Stability > Better Health

Conversely, people with an inadequate education more often live in poverty and therefore experience more obesity, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems than people in better financial circumstances.

Terry Reilly’s effort to address education lies in our Early Childhood Development program.

This includes a baby box to educate expecting mothers about the importance of care throughout childhood.

Once the baby is born, a series of pediatric visits ensures the child meets important developmental milestones. An early visit includes a free book from “Reach Out and Read” to encourage literacy and language development.

We also participate in the “Prescription 4 Play” program which provides a Lego kit to emphasize that play is a crucial part of brain development.

A new Outdoor Play Kit further extends this program to encourage outdoor exercise and activity.

When we address education through early childhood development, we are setting the foundation for better health throughout life.

In April, we’ll talk about Terry Reilly’s effort to make healthcare more accessible. Keep up the great work making sure every patient conducts an SDOH screening!

Patient Safety Week Winners

I want to thank everyone who participated in Patient Safety Awareness Week.

The theme for this year was Safer Together, emphasizing the importance of protecting the entire team, from the care providers to our support staff to our patients and their families.

It is because of you that our patients and staff remain safe every day!

The safety survey is still open and we value your input!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Jeff Hall and Jami Pifer from Northwest Neurobehavioral Health!

Jeff, a licensed Clinical Psychologist specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Jami, licensed Speech Language Pathologist, have contracted with TRHS to provide on-site Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) testing for kiddos ages 2-15.

All internal TRHS patients are eligible to be referred for this service if a provider suspects there may be deficits or if there are symptoms that may indicate the presence of an ASD.

Their mission is to improve the quality of life and accessibility to services for children with ASD and their families.

If you have a patient who would benefit from neurobehavioral health testing, please submit an INTERNAL TRHS referral by navigating to the Referrals screen > Internal Referrals > TRHS Internal Referral to Neuropsych Testing (Dr Hall or NWNBH). Employee Spotlight: Gali Gastelum

Hello all! I am Galilea but I like to go by Gali because it's short and easier to say😊

I am a Certified Medical Assistant in Melba. I’ve been working here for 2 years. I love this clinic and the community.

I enjoy working with my coworkers, they make things flow naturally and make the environment positive.

Currently, I'm attending college to become a Registered Nurse.

Being a Medical Assistant has expanded my interest in medicine and helping others.

A hobby that I really enjoy is going to the gym and working out. I am a gym girly and I can’t live without being in the gym. It's my 3rd home other than work and my actual home.

I also like to paint and go on nature walks when it's summer and sunny.

She does an awesome job, she is an absolute joy.

I was at the Cleveland Clinic on a call with a bunch of IT people, and we were trying to test the scanning errors so that we could try and get it fixed. Marissa is always so willing to help out when needed. She made phone calls to find an oral surgeon who takes our patient's insurance. This isn't the first time she has done it. On that same day, she helped us get a homeless patient on the grant so we could see him and address an urgent need the same day. Thank you for always being willing to help out! You are an amazing teammate!
