A Message from ITMA President, Chris Winter
Greetings to all members, friends, and followers of the International 12 Metre Association!
ITMA’s Southern European VP, Bernard Minvielle and I recently spent a day in Barcelona discussing the September 12 Metre reunion at the Americas’ Cup venue. The event will take place in the Heart of the AC village and we are looking forward to more than 15 boats attending. This is a great opportunity for the Class to showcase our history with boats from all divisions potentially participating.
The World Championship in Porquerolles France will have at least 6 Grand Prix 12mRs participating. This division is really taking off in the Med with active racing at many events this summer. There will be boats from the Northern European fleet attending as well. This looks to be the biggest World Championship for the class since 2019.
For information on these two events and the many more being offered during 2024, check the schedules for each of the regional fleets below.

Introducing the Newest Members of the ITMA Team: DIVISIONAL REPRESENTATIVES
The Executive Committee is pleased to welcome four dynamic 12mR sailors to the ITMA Team. Fredrik Malmberg (Vintage), Jephtha (Jeph) Tausig (Traditional), Peter Askew (Modern) and Johan Blach Petersen (Grand Prix) have volunteered to serve as representatives for their respective divisions as described in our 12mR Class By-Laws:
These representatives were suggested to the Exec Comm by their regional VPs. All are active 12mR owners / co-owners; this positions them to best represent their fellow divisional members. Each of the new Divisional Representatives will develop their role according to the composition and concerns of their specific division; but the overall goal is to improve communications and exchange of ideas throughout.
ITMA President, Chris Winter wrote: This Class is about volunteers. We dedicate our time to keep it active, fun and fair. There are always things we can do better, but if something isn’t working and we don’t know about it, it is hard to fix! As very active members of the Class, these representatives have direct contact with the owners and sailors of their Divisions. This is a strong asset for the Class that has been underused. We want feedback from the Divisions!” In a request to the Divisional Representatives, he asked that they:
- Gain knowledge of all fellow divisional members
- Establish a communication network among them
- Act as clearing house for resources-- vendors, etc.
- Provide feedback from fellow Division members
- Report on Division specific issues to ITMA Exec Comm
- Collect and report racing results to ITMA Secretary for posting
- As ambassadors of ITMA, promote and support the legacy of the 12mR Class

Although centered in Newport, RI, the Americas fleet extends over two continents with yachts located in other U.S. states and the Caribbean.
After the busy Worlds summer of 2023 in Newport, the 12MYC anticipates a season of rebuilding while looking ahead to plans for 2025 - 2026. It is hoped that new owners will be found for Defender (US-33) and Victory '83 (K-22) to maintain the strong Modern Division fleet in the U.S. The Newport fleet has decided not to hold a North American Championship in 2024.

12PPP: Protect and Preserve for Posterity
|
ITMA VP, Steve Eddleston has issued a call to action around the concept: 12PPP to “Protect and Preserve 12mRs for Posterity”
Eddleston explained his thoughts on 12PPP in an invitation to 12mR owners and others to join him for an exploratory discussion on April 24th. He wrote:
"One thing that links all of us together is the respect and admiration we have for the 12s, their legacy, and their ongoing contribution to history of sailing here in America, and around the world.
By preserving and protecting these amazing vessels, we can ensure future generations of young and upcoming sailors can be as inspired as we and countless other sailors and spectators have been for many decades to come.
How we achieve such an auspicious and audacious goal is yet to be determined but I would like to involve you and others at an exploratory kickoff meeting where we will hear from preservation experts as to how we can begin our journey."
If you would like to learn more and/ or to attend the meeting please email Steve Eddleston

World Sailing Adopts 12mR Rule Change:
Extends Measurement Certificate Validity to 4 Years
| |
|
At the ITMA Annual General Meeting held on October 28, 2023, the Class Membership unanimously voted to extend the Measurement Certificate validity period from 2 years to 4 years. In the application to World Sailing, ITMA’s Technical Director, Ken McAlpine reasoned that extending the certification “will reduce the ongoing inconvenience and cost of Rule compliance for our members.”
All other requirements re: Measurement Certificates remain unchanged
Last month, World Sailing officially ratified this request and the change is now in force. The updated 12mR Rule is now available on both the World Sailing and ITMA websites.

Who Is ITMA and What Do We Do?
The 116 year-old International 12 Metre Class encompasses a living history of racing yacht design by the world’s foremost naval architects including Olin Stephens, Clinton Crane, William Fife III, Philip Rhodes, Johan Anker, Ben Lexcen and more who pushed their designs to the very limits of innovation. The resulting boats represented the pinnacle of yacht development from 1907-1987 for the highest levels of international sailing competition– the Olympic Games (1908-1920) and the America’s Cup (1958-1987).
