Our Youth Aren’t Hitting the Road for Next Summer’s Mission—We’re Hitting the Skies Instead!

Join Our Costa Rica Interest Meeting, September 4, at 7:30 p.m..

We will meet via Zoom!

We’ve loved our many years of missions in the North Carolina mountains, but this year we’re switching it up a bit by heading South instead of West. For summer 2025, we’ll be serving our neighbors in the Episcopal Church of Costa Rica. International mission and service trips are an incredible experience and opportunity, and we can’t wait to share the details with our current and recently-graduated youth and their families.

We can’t wait to talk through the who, what, when, where, and—most importantly—the why of this summer mission trip.

Join us on Zoom September 4, using the link below, and password CostaRica (no space).

Fall Foyers are Coming! Sign Up Today to Join Our Next Groups

Or look for the sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall.

The Summer session of our Foyer Dinner Groups was grand fun, and we are now starting signups for our next round of groupings! Please join us by signing up online at the link above or on the signup sheet in the Parish Hall.

What are Foyer Dinners, you ask? They are a wonderful way to get to know fellow parishioners over monthly meals. Each group includes 6–8 members who enjoy informal monthly gatherings. Most groups meet where the host provides the main course and guests bring sides, appetizers, and desserts. Others choose to meet for burgers or pizza. The goal is to share a meal and have time to get to know each other outside of our parish life.

If you would like to learn more, look for Ralph and Laura Bricker (who are organizing the groups) after worship on Sundays. Or contact them at 843-263-3288 or by email.

Would You Like to Be Confirmed in the Episcopal Church?

Please Let Us Know by September 15—Our Bishop’s Visitation is November 10

Confirmation is the sacramental rite through which persons confirm their baptismal vows and deepen their commitment to the Episcopal Church. Those wishing to join the Episcopal Church may do so through confirmation or, if confirmed already, through reception or a reaffirmation of their confirmation commitment. Persons already confirmed in other churches adhering to the apostolic succession (such as Roman Catholic and Lutheran) are not confirmed again but received into our communion. Those who are baptized and confirmed who wish to recommit themselves to a life of faith may reaffirm their baptismal vows.

Bishop Jennifer Brooke-Davidson will be with us on November 10, 2024. If you are interested in confirmation, reception, or reaffirmation, please contact the Rev. Ginny Bain Inman.

Start Reading for Our Book Study on A Voice in the Wilderness

First MeetingSeptember 15

In 2022, The Next Big Idea Club listed A Voice in the Wilderness: A Pioneering Biologist Explains How Evolution Can Help Us Solve Our Biggest Problems (Basic Books) by Joseph L. Graves, Jr., as one of its 26 best science books of the year. In May 2023, Christianity Today published a scathing review of the book written by the anti-science Discovery Institute. And a month later, the scholarly journal Black Theology hailed it for its “prophetic voice.”

A Voice in the Wilderness is an exploration of the scientific career of Dr. Joseph L. Graves, Jr., who is a St. Andrew’s parishioner. This fall, we will offer a three-week formation study to discuss the main themes of the book:

  • racism within science and how Joe Graves became the first African American evolutionary biologist;
  • how to have a productive dialog between faith and science; and
  • what evolutionary science can tell us about how to solve some of our biggest social problems.

We hope you will put this on your calendar for Sundays, September 15, 22, and 29, right after worship, and start reading now. The book is available for order through local book sellers and online. Our study will focus on Chapters 1, 9, 10, and 14.

EfM is Seeking New ParticipantsClasses Begin in September

"What is my own ministry in God’s creation?”

Join us to explore this question and to learn together.

Education for Ministry or “EfM” might also be called Exploration for Ministry. In this small-group seminar program where everyone participates and contributes, you’ll explore the Bible, the history of Christianity and Christian theology, what YOU believe, and what it means to be a person of faith in today’s world. Through study, prayer, and a process called Theological Reflection, you’ll enjoy guided conversations on diverse topics that you rarely if ever have with others. The critical question we seek to answer is “What is my own ministry in God’s creation?”

A new EfM class will begin this fall, marking the 17th year that St. Andrew’s has sponsored a group. While EfM is a four-year program, participants commit to only one year at a time, which runs September through May. In addition to learning and discovery, EfM offers a source of fellowship among its participants. We hope you will consider joining the class this fall.

If you would like to enroll or ask questions, please contact Brenda Swearingin (at 336-423-6876 or by email) or Marcia Moore (at 336-202-6516 or by email).

Join Bishop Curry for Vote Faithfully: Episcopalians Engaging the U.S. Election

September 18, 1 p.m.

Click here to Register for this Online Event.

Join Presiding Bishop Michael Curry with guests from across the church exploring the meaning behind voting from a theological perspective that centers this civic action as one expression of caring for one another and God’s creation. Our panelists will offer framing for healthy, faith-based civic engagement from the theoretical to the tangible, including addressing why it is important for Episcopal churches to leverage our resources to help our broader communities vote. In an election full of increasing pressures—disinformation, the risk of political violence, disenfranchisement, environmental concerns, and more—come learn how to navigate challenges while remaining focused in our preparations to cast our votes in this fall’s election. Our panelists will provide an engaging discussion and direct attendees to resources that can help you encourage your parishioners and community to vote faithfully.

Help Welcome Our Afghan Allies

Click here to learn more about how you can help.

Since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, more than 97,000 Afghans, including those who worked alongside the U.S. military, diplomats, and aid workers in Afghanistan, have arrived in the United States seeking safety. Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM) and other refugee resettlement agencies have worked to resettle Afghans who were able to leave Afghanistan. Many of these Afghans face an uncertain future without legal permanent status. As Christians, we have the opportunity to help the vulnerable and to extend welcome to those who seek refuge.

We have a particular obligation to help Afghans who worked alongside the U.S. government, as well as those who were most at risk when the Taliban returned to power. We are renewing our call for Congress to support the passage of the “Afghan Adjustment Act” (S.Amdt.2682 to S.4638) as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 or as a standalone bill to create a dedicated path to permanent status for Afghans in the United States. Please join us and write your members today!

EYC Is Looking for a Few Good Leaders—Could You Be One?

Our EYC, the place to be on Sunday evenings for St. Andrew’s 6th–12th graders, is growing by leaps and bounds. So, this year we’re transitioning from meeting twice a month to meeting weekly. This means we need the support of our parish family to keep this ministry growing. If you have a heart for tweens and teens and a spirit for a whole lot of fun, fellowship, and spiritual development, this might be the place for you. The time commitment is only a few hours per month, and we promise that the payoff is worth every second. Spending time with this incredible group of youth and young adults is always rewarding and so much fun! Please contact Martha Chaires to learn more or sign up.

Anglican Cycle of Prayer: Igreja Anglicana de Moçambique e Angola

The Presiding Bishop of the Anglican province of Mozambique and Angola, shown here, is the Most Rev. Carlos Matsinhe. The text is “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord…. Serve the Lord with gladness,” Psalm 100:1-2.

From the Facebook page of the Igreja Anglicana de Moçambique e Angola - IAMA

In one of the more unusual stories in Anglicanism, a layman from Liverpool, Archibald Patterson, began evangelistic work in Angola in the 1920s, leading to perhaps 70,000 “Anglicans” by 1961. This development was largely unknown to the Communion, and when an Angolan church leader, Alexander Domingos, came to England to study, saying he was from the Anglican Church in Angola, he was asked, “What Anglican Church in Angola?” Gradually a formal Anglican relationship emerged. Mozambique followed a more traditional approach. To the north, the Universities Mission to Central Africa began work in 1893. To the south, workers in the South African mines returned to their home country, determined to continue as Anglicans. Eventually Mozambique, then Angola, became part of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, and in 2021 the churches in these two Portuguese-speaking nations separated to become the newest province in the Anglican Communion.
