Historical talk by PNW Historian Feliks Banel

Join us for a 1.5 hour boat tour of Fremont's Maritime History on Lake Union and the Ship Canal on the MV Fremont Avenue. Historian Feliks Banel provides fascinating guidance on the history and industry of the area. Includes drinks and heavy apps.

Date & Time: Wednesday, August 16, 5:00-7:00 pm.

Location: Fisherman's Terminal, Dock 9

The boat departs the dock at 5:30 pm Sharp!

Plan to arrive a half hour early to facilitate an on-time departure!

Cost: $49/person with a maximum capacity of 42 people.

Fremont Lake Union Center consists of 3 buildings; Plaza, Lakeview, and Waterfront.

Built in 1998, the Plaza building offers four floors of office space. The Waterfront building was built at the same time in 1998 and consists of 3 floors of office space. Ten years later, the Lakeview building was built in 2008 and has four floors of office space. There are three levels in the Parking Garage in which P1 and P2 are shared between Plaza and Lakeview, and P3 is shared between all three buildings.

Write with Hugo House: Seattle Writes @ Fremont Branch

Tuesday, August 8, 2023, 6 – 7:30 pm

Our mission during this time of distraction, artistic fatigue, and social isolation is to create a regular time and space for writers to write and to meet each other. In this group, writers introduce themselves and are provided optional fiction, poetry and nonfiction prompts to work on for 60-70 minutes of sustained silent writing time, though they are more than welcome to work on their own projects instead. Small group breakout sessions at the end of our time together encourage participants to share and respond to work generated during the session, or just get to know the other writers in the group.

About the Facilitator:

Alma García’s short fiction has appeared in Narrative Magazine, Kweli Journal and Bluestem, among others. She holds an MFA from the University of Arizona and has received numerous writing awards. Her novel, "All That Rises," is forthcoming from Camino del Sol in fall of 2023.

Burke-Gilman Missing Link Project Information

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is launching a design and public engagement process to study what an alternative “Missing Link” connection using 17th Ave NW, Leary Ave NW, and NW Market St would look like and mean for community members and businesses. This early design will result in an initial concept only (30% Design) at this point, and will be refined with community input. We’ll share this work with the public and take feedback on how to best design this route. You are receiving this email because you have expressed interest in projects in Ballard.

NERF Grant work continues in Fremont

As part of our NERF Grant that neighborhood Hero, Leo Griffin helped us receive, we continue to refurbish art throughout our community. Three architectural benches installed in the 80s have been gussied up to their original charm.

Thank you to local Fremont business NOVO Painting & Property Services for the work that went into restoring these one-of-a-kind benches.

The NERF Grant has been administered by the Fremont Chamber (Caroline Sherman).

2024 Parks and Open Space Update

Seattle Parks and Recreation invites the community to participate in the development of the 2024 Parks and Open Space Plan. Please visit the new Engagement Hub https://engage.seattleparksandrec.com/en/ and join us at one of the three remaining workshops being held at SPR Community Center locations around Seattle.

The workshops at the community centers will focus on the geographic area. However, we will also accept input on citywide needs. All events are from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Has your small business experienced property damage? Apply to receive a $2,000 grant to help cover storefront repair costs!

Mayor Harrell, Councilmember Sara Nelson, and the Seattle Office of Economic Development (OED) announced the launch of the Storefront Repair Fund , which leverages nearly $2 million dollars of federal funding to repair or reimburse damage to small business storefronts. Through the Storefront Repair Fund, small business owners can apply for grants up to $2,000 to repair current property damage or receive reimbursement for costs paid out of pocket for past damages that occurred on or after January 1, 2021. Grants will help cover costs such as broken windows, broken doors, broken locks, and etching on windows. 

OED will accept applications from small businesses on a continuous basis until all funding has been spent. Applications are open now!
